The weight of uquq is real, and it has edges
Any course that only tells you that you are allowed a limit, and never tells you how serious undutifulness to parents is, does not deserve to be trusted. So here it is. The report below places uquq among the gravest of the major sins, alongside associating others with Allah.
And here is the part that gets left off. The jurists worked with a definition. What the commentaries on this report describe, including Ibn Hajar al Asqalani in Fath al Bari, is that uquq means conduct that causes a parent harm of a kind the child is not religiously required to accept. The consequence of a definition like that is that an act which is permitted, and which your parent dislikes, is not automatically uquq.

Qur’an and Sunnah
۞يَٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُواْ كُونُواْ قَوَّٰمِينَ بِٱلۡقِسۡطِ شُهَدَآءَ لِلَّهِ وَلَوۡ عَلَىٰٓ أَنفُسِكُمۡ أَوِ ٱلۡوَٰلِدَيۡنِ وَٱلۡأَقۡرَبِينَۚ إِن يَكُنۡ غَنِيًّا أَوۡ فَقِيرࣰ ا فَٱللَّهُ أَوۡلَىٰ بِهِمَاۖ فَلَا تَتَّبِعُواْ ٱلۡهَوَىٰٓ أَن تَعۡدِلُواْۚ وَإِن تَلۡوُۥٓاْ أَوۡ تُعۡرِضُواْ فَإِنَّ ٱللَّهَ كَانَ بِمَا تَعۡمَلُونَ خَبِيرࣰ ا
You who believe, uphold justice and bear witness to God, even if it is against yourselves, your parents, or your close relatives. Whether the person is rich or poor, God can best take care of both. Refrain from following your own desire, so that you can act justly- if you distort or neglect justice, God is fully aware of what you do
Qur’an 4:135
Narrated Abu Bakra:The Prophet (ﷺ) said thrice, "Should I inform you about the greatest of the great sins?" They said, "Yes, O Allah's Messenger (ﷺ)!" He said, "To join others in worship with Allah and to be undutiful to one's parents." The Prophet (ﷺ) then sat up after he had been reclining (on a pillow) and said, "And I warn you against giving a false witness, and he kept on saying that warning till we thought he would not stop.
