Why the sentences land the way they do

At least it was early. At least you know you can get pregnant. Everything happens for a reason. You are young. You will have another one.

None of these are said by cruel people. They are said by people who are uncomfortable and who reach for something, and each one of them, without meaning to, does the same job. It moves the conversation off the specific child who is not here.

You will have another one is the sharpest, because a future child is not a replacement for this one, and being offered one implies the first was interchangeable.

Then there is the one that gets said before four months. There was nothing there. It is careless as theology and it is cruel as pastoral care, and among the women who report it, it is very often the exact sentence after which they stopped grieving where anyone could see.

You are not oversensitive. The sentences are doing what it feels like they are doing.
