What was actually found, when anyone looked
Three studies, and the first is the one to read if you have been told this was minor.
Women were followed after early pregnancy loss, and a substantial share of them met the criteria for post traumatic stress a month afterwards, with a still meaningful share nine months on. Not sadness that faded on schedule. A trauma pattern.
The second study is where the phrase about commonness gets its answer. Early loss is common, and the commonness has been used for years to justify poor care rather than better care.
The third is here for anyone in the infertility strand. Difficulty conceiving is not rare and it is not a personal peculiarity, and a large share of the people it happens to never seek care at all.

Women followed prospectively after miscarriage or ectopic pregnancy showed post traumatic stress at one month in a substantial proportion, still present in a meaningful proportion at nine months. The authors flag that women dropped out over the follow up period and that screening questionnaires were used rather than diagnostic interviews.

Early pregnancy loss is common and carries physical, psychological and economic costs. The authors argue that its commonness has been used to justify inadequate care rather than to improve it.
