Being in the building is not the same as being known

A great many lonely Muslims already go. They pray in the row, they hear the khutbah, they leave through the same door as everyone else, and nobody has said their name in a year.

Just go to the masjid is advice that assumes attendance produces belonging. It sometimes does. It often does not, and it particularly does not for women, for converts, for disabled people, for anyone who moved recently, and for anyone who has had a bad experience in that specific building.

We are not sending you anywhere. We do not know whether the nearest place is a good place for you, and it would be dishonest to pretend otherwise. What lesson four describes works in any room where the same faces turn up more than once.
