Where loneliness and depression overlap, and where they part

They share a lot of surface. Both flatten the day, both make effort expensive, both make people withdraw.

The difference worth noticing is what happens when connection actually arrives. Loneliness tends to lift, at least for a while, when a real conversation happens. In depression the lift often does not come, or comes and immediately drains away, and the flatness reaches things that have nothing to do with people. Food, work, prayer, things you used to want.

Duration matters too. Most days for two weeks or more, and not lifting, is the ordinary threshold anyone assessing you would use.

Do not try to sort this alone, and do not treat what you just read as a test you have passed or failed. It is a reason to ask.
