What free regulated debt advice actually is

Most people picture something between a bank and a debt collector. It is neither.

It is free. It is confidential. The adviser is not selling you anything and does not take a share of anything. They will go through what you owe, including the envelopes you have not opened, and they will not be shocked by any of it, because it is the entire content of their working week.

They can talk to creditors on your behalf, which for a lot of people is the single largest relief in the whole process, because the calls stop being yours to answer.

You do not need to have opened anything first. You do not need a spreadsheet. Turning up with a carrier bag of unopened post is a completely normal way to start.

Free services exist in most countries and this platform will point you to the one where you are rather than assume you are in any particular one. If somebody wants a fee upfront to manage your debt, that is not the kind of service this step is describing.
