Amina picks shoes, because shoes are ninety percent of the mornings.

Week one is discouraging. She catches it four times, and two of those are half hearted, and once she says it and her son looks at her as if she has been replaced. She almost stops.

Week two, something small. On Wednesday the six year old puts his shoes on at the door while she is dealing with the youngest, and he says, look. He wants it noticed. That is the whole mechanism showing itself in one word.

By the end of the month the mornings are not calm. There are still Thursdays. What has changed is that shoes have come off the list, and shoes were about a third of the shouting, and there is now one fewer flashpoint in a sixty minute window that had four.

She has not become a different parent. She has removed one item.
