A woman has never been hit. Her husband has never raised a hand. She has no money of her own, her sister has stopped calling because of what happened the last time she did, and she checks his face before she speaks. Is anything happening to her?
Yes. What is being described is control, and it is the most common shape this takes. Restricted money, an isolated life and scanning someone's face before you speak are three of the recognised working parts of it. The absence of a blow is not evidence that nothing is wrong. In many places it is not even a crime, which tells you about the law rather than about her.
