Where there is no shelter and no law

Here is the honest part, and the course would be lying by omission without it.

Across much of the Muslim majority world there is no funded national helpline, no shelter network, and in many places no legal category that captures control at all. Control as a course of conduct is a criminal offence in England and Wales, in Scotland, in Ireland and in parts of Australia, and in most of the world it is not an offence at all. A woman in Birmingham and a woman in a town with one police station and no refuge need different advice, and anyone who gives them the same advice has not thought about it.

Where formal provision does not exist, the realistic routing is different rather than absent. Trusted family in another household, which is the oldest shelter there is. A women's legal aid organisation, which exists in more countries than people assume. A sympathetic doctor who will write down what he sees. A national women's union or a ministry mechanism, which is often slow and sometimes useless and occasionally the thing that works.

That is not enough, and we are not going to pretend it is. It is what there is, and knowing which of them exists near you is worth an afternoon.
