And We will indeed try you with something of fear and hunger, and decrease of wealth, souls, and fruits; and give good news to the patient. The custom of the Lord is that whenever He threatens the servant and shows harshness in a verse, then, right after that or before it, He caresses the servant and gives him hope. Thus in this verse He breaks the servant by mentioning those harsh things and varieties of trial. Then He gives good news, He caresses, and He says, “and give good news to the patient.” And, at the beginning of these verses He says, “Surely God is with the patient” [2:153]. Glory be to Him! How gentle and how merciful He is to His servants! And We will indeed try you. He says, “We will test you, sometimes with fear, sometimes with dread, sometimes with poverty, sometimes with hunger, sometimes with outward affliction, sometimes with inward sorrow.” The outward trial and evide

The greatest terror shall not make them sorrow, and the angels will receive them: “This is the day that you were promised.” On the Day of Resurrection in the greatest gathering place and most tremendous courtyard, they will not hear from the angels the call “no good news” [25:22], nor the address, “Stand apart today, O offenders!” [36:59], nor the harsh call, “Slink into it, and do not talk to Me!” [23:108]. They will not hear the call of separation's pain, nor will they despair of mercy. Rather the angels will keep on coming, company after company, and they will give the good news: “This is the day that you were promised,” that is, “This is the day in which you have the promised reward.” Among them are those who will be received by the angels, and among them are those who will be addressed and made known by the King. God will say, “My servants, have you been yearning for Me?” He will sa

And Allah gives the example of a township (Makkah), it was secure and peaceful: its provision coming to it in abundance from every place, but it (its people) denied the favors of Allah. So Allah made it taste extreme hunger (famine) and fear, because of what they did (112)There has come to them a Messenger from among themselves, but they denied him, so the torment seized them while they were wrongdoers (113) The Example of Makkah This example refers to the people of Makkah, which had been secure, peaceful and stable, a secure sanctuary while men were being snatched away from everywhere outside of it. Whoever entered Makkah, he was safe, and he had no need to fear, as Allah said: وَقَالُوا إِن نَّتَّبِعِ الْهُدَىٰ مَعَكَ نُتَخَطَّفْ مِنْ أَرْضِنَا ۚ أَوَلَمْ نُمَكِّن لَّهُمْ حَرَمًا آمِنًا يُجْبَىٰ إِلَيْهِ ثَمَرَاتُ كُلِّ شَيْءٍ رِّزْقًا مِّن لَّدُنَّا (And they say: "If we follow th

How family structure shapes adolescent mental health under financial hardship?

Background: Financial hardship and family structure are each known to influence adolescent mental health, but their interactive effects remain underexplored. This study examined whether specific family structures buffer or amplify the impact of household financial hardship on adolescent mental health during the COVID-19 pandemic. Methods: We analyzed data from the 2021-2022 Korea Youth Risk Behavior Survey, a nationally representative sample of 101,402 adolescents aged 12-18 years. Mental health outcomes included sleep problems, loneliness, perceived stress, anxiety, depression, and suicidal ideation. Financial hardship was assessed by self-reported household-level economic difficulty due to the pandemic. Family structure was categorized as two-parent, single-mother, single-father, step-family, and grandparent family. We conducted complex-sample logistic regression and calculated both ad

Thoughts and emotions evoked by thinking about own death: American versus Japanese undergraduates.

The prompts "What emotions does the thought of your own death arouse in you?" and "What will happen to you when your body dies?" have been used to induce anxiety in Terror Management Theory. The current study investigated how the responses to these prompts may reveal cross-national differences by using a text-mining approach. Undergraduates in the US (n = 298) and Japan (n = 212) participated in the study. Across both groups, anxiety was the most common emotion. Cross-national differences also emerged, such that students in the US were more likely to mention sadness, funeral, and religiosity for the first prompt, and acceptance, spiritual change, and religiosity for the second prompt. Students in Japan were more likely to mention regret for the first, and sadness, emptiness, and funeral for the second prompt. Death education and educators: The role of attitudes, anxiety, and future time perspective.

This study explores the impact of death representations on openness to death education among university students in teaching and education degree programs. Drawing from Terror Management Theory, the roles of future time perspective (FTP), death anxiety, and the ontological representation of death as total annihilation were analyzed. The results show that viewing death as annihilation negatively impacts FTP, reducing the ability to think about the future. Diminished FTP increases negative thoughts about death and lack of death acceptance. When FTP still allows making sense of life despite death, it reduces death rejection, however, it does not increase openness to death education, activating proximal defenses. Conversely, when death representation constrains FTP, death thoughts emerge that lead to desiring death education pathways, activating distal defenses. The study highlights the impo

Mediating effects of healthy lifestyle factors on associations between mental health and functional outcomes in early adolescence.

Background: Although mental health and healthy lifestyle interventions are associated with functional outcomes in adolescence, the extent to which particular lifestyle factors explain relationships between mental health and outcome are unclear. Here we examined mediating effects of lifestyle factors on relationships between mental health and two functional outcomes measured 2-3 years later, as well as moderating effects of environmental risk factors on mediation strength in early adolescence. Method: We analyzed data from three waves of the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development Study (ages 10-11, 11-12, and 12-13 years). Mediating effects of sleep quality, screen time, physical activity, and Mediterranean diet on the relationships between depression, anxiety, psychotic-like experience (PLE) distress, and total problems with two subsequent functional outcomes (academic functioning and so

Collapse and validation of terror management anxiety buffers -therapists' reactions to war.

This qualitative study aimed to analyze therapists' reactions to the Israel-Hamas war, using lenses offered by Terror Management Theory (TMT). Israeli therapists (N = 201) were asked to share their experiences, feelings and perceptions in light of the events and their recent professional interventions. Findings reveal four themes: first, showing that the war indeed raised existential anxiety and mortality salience, and then, in view of these, the functioning of the TMT anxiety buffer mechanisms in additional three themes, namely enhancement of self-esteem; reinforcement of collective worldviews; and seeking proximity to others. Interestingly, we observed both the collapse of these mechanisms after exposure to the salience of death, as well as their validation as a further reaction. Moreover, we identified breakdown and validation in both personal and professional elements of the anxiety

Dynamic interactions between physical activity, exercise adherence, and adverse psychological states in Chinese older adults: a cross-lagged network analysis.

Background: With the accelerating process of population ageing in China, negative emotional problems in older people have become increasingly prominent. Exploring the dynamic relationship between these emotions and physical activity, as well as exercise adherence, is of great significance for promoting the physical and mental health of older people. Methods: This study used a longitudinal design to conduct two follow-up surveys of 876 older adult individuals in China. A cross-lagged network analysis method was employed to examine the interactions between physical activity, exercise adherence, and adverse psychological states indicators (depression, anxiety, stress, loneliness, and sadness/anger rumination). Results: Cross-sectional network analysis showed that physical activity and exercise adherence maintained a stable relationship, and the network structure tended to become more concen

Projecting and valuing climate change impacts on anxiety and depression in the contiguous USA: a damage function approach.

Background: Links between climate change and mental health concerns in the USA are recognised, but research is underdeveloped. Many studies rely on self-reported exposures, non-representative samples, or inconsistent definitions of mental health outcomes, limiting their utility in supporting robust, population-scale projections to inform the public. Few studies have attempted to quantify future impacts, and those that do have largely focused on suicide rather than broader mental health morbidity. To address this gap, we projected the impact of 1-6°C contiguous US warming and the associated precipitation changes on self-reported mental health difficulties, anxiety, and depression symptom-days among adults relative to 2005 baseline climate and 2015 baseline health data. Methods: We combined epidemiologically derived exposure-response relationships with projections from five CMIP6 climate m

Post-traumatic cognitions, death anxiety, and coping mechanisms in patients with major depression disorder affected by a natural disaster: A mediatory model study.

Background: In this study, it was focused not on mental disorders that arise after a natural disaster, but on how psychiatric patients diagnosed with mental disorders were affected by the earthquake. Objective: This study was aimed at investigating the relationship between death anxiety, one of the subheadings of Terror Management Theory, and post-traumatic cognitions and coping strategies in individuals diagnosed with Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) after a natural disaster. Method: This cross-sectional, descriptive, and correlational study was conducted in the psychiatry outpatient clinic of a tertiary hospital in Adıyaman, one of the provinces affected by the February 6, 2023 earthquake in Turkey between February 2024 and May 2024. Ideological Rigidity and Political Conservatism in Relation to Death Anxiety and Reactions to Those With Different Beliefs.

This research tested the assumptions of Terror Management Theory (Pyszczynski et al., 2015) and conservatism as motivated social cognition (Jost et al., 2003) regarding how belief systems relate to existential anxiety. Conservatism as motivated social cognition posits that politically conservative ideologies are uniquely capable of minimizing fears about death. In contrast, TMT asserts that ideological rigidity is associated with less fear of death but it also promotes aggression and intolerance against those with different beliefs. The relation of ideological rigidity and political conservatism to death anxiety and intolerance of those who have differing worldviews was explored in a sample of American university students (n = 134) and of American respondents from the Prolific crowdsourcing platform (n = 199). The results from both samples supported the hypothesis that ideological rigidi

"Love Over Fear": How Nostalgic Songs and Relationship Types Buffer Death Anxiety.

The fear of death is a fundamental human anxiety. From the perspective of terror management theory (TMT), this study examines the potential of music to alleviate death anxiety. We conducted a 2 (salience: mortality vs. control) × 2 (song type: nostalgic vs. non-nostalgic) × 2 (relationship type: romantic vs. parent-child) between-subjects factorial experiment with 335 middle-aged participants (ages 35-40) who were married, had children, and had living parents. Multiple interaction effects among mortality salience, nostalgia, and relationship type indicated that romantic songs - especially nostalgic romantic songs - were more effective in reducing death anxiety than parent-child relationship songs. The findings highlight the defensive function of romantic relationship songs within the TMT framework, offering new insights for clinical interventions and public mental health practices aimed

Trajectories of mental distress and quality of life during Ramadan fasting in young Israeli Muslims are gender-specific.

There is a knowledge gap concerning mental health changes across the Ramadan period. In a study of 284 young Israeli Muslim adults, we explored within-subject changes in global distress (GD), specific symptoms (depression, anxiety, stress), and quality of life (QoL) across five assessments spanning Ramadan fast. Using repeated-measures general linear modeling, significant effects were found for GD [F(4) = 20.890, p < 0.001], demonstrating a two-stage reduction in scores: an initial decrease during the first week of Ramadan, followed by a further decrease post-Ramadan. Females consistently reported higher GD scores [F(1) = 12.656, p < 0.001], though no significant time-point×sex interactions were found. However, during Ramadan, females exhibited a transient GD increase [F(1) = 4.053, p = 0.046], which was not observed in males. Subscale analyses revealed significant reductions in Depressi

Social comparison and maladaptive emotion regulation are associated with poorer mental health in social media users.

The ubiquity of social technologies in daily life has intensified concerns about their psychological impact. Emerging evidence points to the quality of engagement and the psychological processes that social media use activates. This study examined these processes in a nationally representative sample of 1,707 adults aged 16-75 (M = 44.5, SD = 14.8), 50.40% females. Objective screen-time verification was complemented with validated self-report questionnaires measuring anxiety and depression symptomatology, anger reactions and displaced aggression, social comparison, and maladaptive emotion regulation. Data were analyzed using correlation analyses, multivariate analysis of covariance (MANCOVA), and path analysis. Findings revealed consistent gender differences: women spent more time online and reported higher levels of social comparison and maladaptive regulation strategies. Cohort analyse

SWPER-Measured women's empowerment and mental health in Bangladesh: a cross-sectional study from 2022 demographic and health survey.

Background: Women in low- and middle-income nations are disproportionately afflicted by depression and anxiety, which are contributing factors to the worldwide disease burden. The purpose of this study is to measure the prevalence of anxiety and depression in Bangladeshi women aged 15-49 years and to evaluate the associations between these mental health outcomes and three aspects of empowerment (attitudes toward violence, social independence, and decision-making autonomy). Methods: This study analyzed cross-sectional data from the 2022 Bangladesh Demographic and Health Survey. Empowerment was measured with the survey-based women's empowerment (SWPER) index and categorized as low, medium or high for each domain. Bivariate analysis via chi-square tests was used to identify significant covariates associated with the outcomes. Survey-weighted logistic regressions were performed to estimate a

Partner separation and sex contribute to anxiety-like behavior, but partner separation alone amplifies hippocampal inflammation following immune challenge.

Social bond disruption is increasingly recognized as a potent psychosocial stressor with widespread implications for mental and physical health. The monogamous California mouse (Peromyscus californicus), which forms enduring pair bonds and exhibits distress upon separation, provides a translational model for understanding the neuroimmune consequences of social loss. We hypothesized that partner separation would sensitize neuroimmune responses to systemic inflammation. Adult male and female mice were assigned to one of three housing conditions: naive (isolate-housed), partner (pair-housed for 20 days), or separated (pair-housed for 10 days followed by 10 days of isolation). Mice underwent partner preference assessment, open field testing, and were injected with saline or lipopolysaccharide (LPS; 1 mg/kg), followed by tissue collection. Partnered mice developed selective partner preference

The Transdiagnostic Role of Perfectionism: Insights From Longitudinal Network Analyses in a Sample of College-Age Women.

Perfectionism has been proposed as a transdiagnostic risk factor, preceding symptoms of psychopathology. However, further research is required to understand how perfectionism functions as a transdiagnostic process across a range of psychological disorders. This study used a network approach in a longitudinal design which assessed both dimensions of perfectionism (perfectionistic strivings and perfectionistic concerns) and symptoms of various disorders (obsessive-compulsive disorder, eating disorders, anxiety, depression). Participants (N = 447; female community sample aged 18-30) completed online surveys at baseline and 6-month follow-up, including measures of perfectionism and psychopathology. To disentangle temporal dynamics between these variables, we estimated both separate cross-sectional networks for baseline and follow-up as well as a longitudinal (cross-lagged) network across tim

The impact of PTSD symptoms on post-disaster consumption: tertiary victims of the 2023 Kahramanmaraş earthquakes in Türkiye.

Introduction: The February 2023 Kahramanmaraş earthquakes reshaped everyday life well beyond the impact zone; however, how disaster-linked psychological states influence psychosocial wellbeing and everyday behaviors, including consumer responses among tertiary victims (geographically distant yet psychologically affected), remains underexplored. Methods: We employ an explanatory sequential mixed-methods design (QUAN → QUAL): a cross-sectional survey of Istanbul adults (N = 350) is modeled using PLS-SEM, followed by 24 semi-structured interviews and reflexive thematic analysis, integrated via joint displays. Results: Quantitatively, PTSD relates to post-disaster wellbeing and consumption directly and indirectly through death anxiety (DA), intolerance of uncertainty (IUS), and search for meaning (MLQ-S); perceived media pressure (ME) attenuates these translations on average. Adolescent social media use and its association with mental health: a cross-sectional study in Bradford, England.

Background: Social media is a central part of the lives of adolescents in 2025. The recent rise of short-form content and gamification features has coincided with an increasing prevalence of mental health problems among this age group. Many policy makers are considering restrictions to the amount of time under-16s spend on social media. Despite this, there is limited contemporary evidence about the extent of their social media use, nor meaningful estimates of the effect a reduction may have on their mental health. Here, we estimate daily social media usage for adolescents in the culturally and ethnically diverse city of Bradford, England, plus its association with their mental health. Method: We did a cross-sectional analysis of data from Born in Bradford: Age of Wonder 2023-24, a school-based survey of students aged 12-15 (n = 8,466). Perceived stress and health outcomes among Chinese university students: The chain mediating role of repetitive negative thinking and trait forgiveness.

Stress around COVID-19 among university students is associated with higher physical symptom burden and worse overall health status. This study examined whether RNT and trait forgiveness mediate the link between perceived stress and health outcomes among Chinese university students. A total of 1342 students participated in a survey during the middle of the semester that assessed perceived stress, RNT, trait forgiveness, and various health outcomes. Results revealed significant mediating effects of both RNT and trait forgiveness on the relationship between perceived stress and health outcomes, including anxiety, depression, sleep quality, and physical health. Moreover, the interplay between RNT and trait forgiveness mediated this association. These findings provide a theoretical basis for understanding the interactions among perceived stress, RNT, trait forgiveness, and health outcomes, hi

When weak imagery is worse than none: Core aphantasia and hypophantasia relate differently to mental health, mediated by subjective interoception.

Aphantasia, characterized by absent or reduced visual mental imagery, has been associated with alexithymia and negative mental health outcomes. However, the underlying mechanisms remain unclear. Visual imagery has been proposed as part of an inwardly focused cognitive style that also encompasses interoceptive processing and emotion regulation, suggesting these constructs may be functionally linked. Since mental health is closely tied to interoception, we examined whether interoceptive processing mediates the relationship between imagery ability and mental health. We assessed self-reported imagery vividness (VVIQ), subjective interoceptive accuracy and attention, alexithymia, anxiety, and depression in individuals with aphantasia (n = 153, VVIQ = 16-32) and typical imagers (n = 680, VVIQ = 33-80). Meaning in life as a mediator between death anxiety and life satisfaction.

Research based on Terror Management Theory suggests that death anxiety is a fundamental existential concern that threatens individuals' life satisfaction and that, in the process of coping with this anxiety, individuals tend to seek meaning in life. However, studies directly examining the impact of death anxiety on life satisfaction and the mediating role of meaning are lacking. This study aims to investigate the relationship between death anxiety and life satisfaction among adults and to test the mediating role of meaning in life in this relationship. 396 participants completed online scales measuring death anxiety, life satisfaction, and meaning in life. The findings revealed that death anxiety significantly predicted life satisfaction and that meaning in life partially mediated this relationship. The results suggest that meaning in life may play a buffering role in the association bet

Substance and Behavioural Addictions Among Evacuees: Findings From Israeli Swords of Iron War.

War-related evacuation is a stressful event that may cause mental health problems, which, in turn, might lead to increases in substance and behavioural addictions. We used data collected online during the Swords of Iron to examine associations between being evacuated during the war, mental health, problematic substance use, and behavioural addictions. Study 1 surveyed young adults (ages 18-26) from various areas of Israel. Measures included self-reported anxiety, depression, problematic consumption of alcohol, cannabis, and prescription drugs, and problematic gambling, gaming, and pornography. Evacuees (n = 111) reported higher levels of anxiety, depression, problematic alcohol consumption, and problem gambling than non-evacuees (n = 973), with increased depression, problematic alcohol consumption and problem gambling among men. In Study 2, we used data from a quasi-representative sample
