26 to 50 of 142Aspirations and wellbeing in Romanian and US undergraduates.
Updating cross-cultural research of the past decade on the relationship between life aspirations and wellbeing, we compared Romanian (N=69) and US (N=64) undergraduates on the contribution of the importance and likelihood of attaining intrinsic and extrinsic aspirations to psychological maladjustment and life satisfaction, and on the qualitative meaning they assign to financial success. Similarly to prior studies, we found that extrinsic and intrinsic aspirations tended to be either negatively or positively correlated with life satisfaction, respectively; however, wealth predicted life satisfaction for Romanian students. Unlike previous research, we found generally negative relationships between intrinsic aspirations and psychological maladjustment. Although there were no differences between Romanian and US undergraduates on extrinsic and intrinsic orientation, on the overall importance …

Commodified upbringings: A narrative review on commercial determinants of child and adolescent mental health.
Introduction: The mental health of children and adolescents has become a major global health concern, with increasing diagnoses and use of psychotropic drugs. The commercial determinants of health (CDoH) paradigm links economic and social forces to health outcomes. Highlighting the influence of industries such as food, pharmaceuticals, technology, social media, gambling, alcohol, tobacco and pornography on the mental health of this population is crucial.
Materials and methods: This narrative review synthesises existing literature on the impact of commercial determinants on child and adolescent mental health. A comprehensive search was conducted using PubMed, PsycINFO and Google Scholar, covering publications from 2000 to 2024. The review focused on peer-reviewed articles, reports and relevant grey literature examining the influence of commercial practices on mental health.

Fully Immersive Virtual Reality Using 360° Videos to Manage Well-Being in Older Adults: A Scoping Review.
Objective: The development of negative behavioral and psychosocial factors (depression, anxiety, apathy, etc) is associated with poor well-being, which can contribute to health issues in ageing, especially in the context of COVID-19. Despite its relative novelty, fully immersive virtual reality (VR) interventions through 360° immersive videos are becoming more accessible and flexible and constitute an emerging method to potentially enhance well-being. The aim of this scoping review is to assess the effectiveness of 360° interventions on well-being in older adults with or without cognitive impairment, as well as cybersickness and attitudes toward this technology.
Design: Scoping review.
Setting and participants: Older adults with or without cognitive impairment.
Methods: The PRISMA-SR guideline was followed. Four databases were used, and we selected articles published until April 2022. We…

Policies and interventions to remove gender-related barriers to girls' school participation and learning in low- and middle-income countries: A systematic review of the evidence.
Background: Gender disparities in education continue to undermine girls' opportunities, despite enormous strides in recent years to improve primary enrolment and attainment for girls in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). At the regional, country and subnational levels gender gaps remain, with girls in many settings less likely to complete primary school, less likely to complete secondary, and often less likely to be literate than boys. The academic and policy literatures on the topic of gender-related barriers to girls' education are both extensive. However, there remain gaps in knowledge regarding which interventions are most likely to work in contexts with different combinations of barriers.
Objectives: This systematic review identified and assessed the strength of the evidence of interventions and exposures addressing gender-related barriers to schooling for girls in LMICs.

The development of narrative identity and the emergence of personality disorders in adolescence.
Narrative identity is likely to be important in the development of personality disorder (PD) in adolescence. Adolescents' life narratives provide rich material that is near to their lived experiences and reveal individual differences in self and relatedness and in ways of constructing meaning. Narrative identity is linked with well-being and psychopathology and shapes coping with adversity. Preliminary research suggests that adolescents and adults with PD narrate their lives in ways that are more negative and express lower agency; narratives may also contain content reflecting PD symptoms. Youth's narrative identities may express personality disturbances in self and relationship processes and may affect the consolidation of or recovery from emerging PD in the transition to adulthood - all possibilities worthy of future investigation.

What do we need to know about drone brood homogenate and what is known.
Etnopharmacological relevance: In Polish folk customs, bees are surrounded by the nimbus of holiness, which is reflected in a series of proverbs and phrases in colloquial speech (Markiewicowa, 1992). It was believed that products derived from the beehive, resulting from the effort of insects are endowed with special healing and nutritive properties. As such, bee products have been used in natural medicine for centuries (Markiewicowa, 1992). Nowadays, these properties have been confirmed by systematic scientific assessment. The largest number of scientific reports are focused on the nutritive properties and therapeutic action of propolis, royal jelly, honey, bee venom and pollen. Less information can be found about another product of beekeeping which is drone brood. Drones are responsible for the fertilization of a queen bee, thereby prolonging bee species. In addition to reproduction, th…

Pera A (2018)reviewMEDLINE-indexed journal, not yet read by usFrontiers in psychology18 citations Psychopathological Processes Involved in Social Comparison, Depression, and Envy on Facebook.
Is Facebook utilization beneficial or detrimental for psychological well-being? I draw on outstanding research (e.g., Chou and Edge, 2012; Lin and Utz, 2015; Appel et al., 2016; Ehrenreich and Underwood, 2016; Vogel and Rose, 2016; Hu et al., 2017) to substantiate that examining other individuals' positively presented material on Facebook may have detrimental consequences. Increasing comparisons on Facebook may generate feelings of envy, the latter being a significant process determining the effect of growing social comparison on psychological well-being. To date, there is an increasing body of literature investigating the psychological consequences of Facebook usage, the function of relationship closeness in producing the feelings of contentment and envy, the impacts of exposure to positive content on Facebook, the link between envy and depression on Facebook, and the function of tie st…

Bioactive compounds and health benefits of some palm species traditionally used in Africa and the Americas - A review.
Ethnopharmacological relevance: According to previous ethno-medicinal reviews, Cocos nucifera, Elaeis guineensis and Phoenix dactylifera are among the main palms which are often used on the American and African continents to treat infections, infestations and disorders in the digestive, respiratory, genito-urinary, dermal, endocrine, cardiovascular, muscular-skeletal, mental and neural systems, as well as neoplasms, dental issues and metabolic and nutritional disorders. In addition, one or more species of the wild genera Acrocomia, Areca, Astrocaryum, Attalea, Bactris, Borassus, Calamus, Chamaedorea, Chamaerops, Euterpe, Hyphaene, Mauritia, Oenocarpus and Syagrus have a high number of records of these ethno-medicinal uses. The most used parts of the palm tree are the fruits, followed by roots, seeds, leaves and flower sap.
Aim of the study: This review discusses the phytochemical composi…

Is modern Western culture a health hazard?
The cultures of societies are underestimated determinants of their population health and well-being. This is as true of modern Western culture, including its defining qualities of materialism and individualism, as it is of other cultures. This paper draws on evidence from a range of disciplines to argue that materialism and individualism are detrimental to health and well-being through their impacts on psychosocial factors such as personal control and social support. The focus of the resurgent scientific and political interest in the effects of the social environment on health has been on socioeconomic inequalities in health—especially those associated with income inequality. Two developments strengthen the case for paying more attention to the role of culture in health. The first is that, at the population level, the role of income inequality has become less clear, with recent research …

Embrace Hope: An End-of-Life Intervention to Support Neurological Critical Care Patients and Their Families
Because of the acute nature of most neurological events, families are often faced with rapid processing of the illness with little time to realize that their loved one is going to die. Watching the dying process of patients in acute care settings can be unsettling for both patients’ families and staff. The neurocritical care unit at Riverside Methodist Hospital in Columbus, Ohio, wanted to offer help to families and patients traveling this difficult path. To support this goal, an organized, intentional, and flexible end-of-life intervention was needed. Using subjective data gathered from our neurocritical care staff and client families, we developed a plan of care called “Embrace Hope” to help patients and their families through the dying process. Embrace Hope is a structured multi-disciplinary delineation of end-of-life interactions that include educational and support information to be…

Measuring education in the context of health inequalities
Socio-economic inequalities in a wide range of health outcomes are pervasive and enduring.1 Most often, the association between socio-economic indicators and health is inversely graded (commonly known as social gradients in health) so that the higher the socio-economic position (SEP), the lower is the rate of morbidity and mortality. SEP is a broad concept capturing resource- and prestige-based measures.2 To date, educational level/attainment has been commonly used as an indicator of SEP in health inequalities research due to general acceptance that education is easy to measure and unlikely to be affected by diseases that begin in adult life.3 Of note, early-life health gradients in education (i.e. health selection hypothesis or reverse causality) might also exist and needs to be considered.4 Education is less prone to non-response error compared with income or wealth as SEP indicators.3…

Spirituality and mental health
INTRODUCTION All along, the majority position of Psychiatry has been that Psychiatry has nothing to do with religion and spirituality. Religious beliefs and practices have long been thought to have a pathological basis, and psychiatrists over a century have understood them in this light. Religion was considered as a symptom of mental illness. Jean Charcot and Sigmund Freud linked religion with neurosis. DSM3 portrayed religion negatively by suggesting that religious and spiritual experiences are examples of psychopathology. But recent research reports strongly suggest that to many patients, religion and spirituality are resources that help them to cope with the stresses in life, including those of their illness. Many psychiatrists now believe that religion and spirituality are important in the life of their patients. The importance of spirituality in mental health is now widely accepted.…

Delusion as embodied emotion: a qualitatively driven, multimethod study of first-episode psychosis in the UK.
Background: Delusions in psychosis involve complex and dynamic experiential, affective, cognitive, behavioural, and interpersonal alterations. Their pattern of emergence during the early stages of illness remains poorly understood and the origin of their thematic content unclear. Phenomenological accounts have emphasised alterations of selfhood and reality experience in delusion formation but have not considered the role of life events and other contextual factors in the development of these disturbances. This study aimed to investigate the relationship between self-experience and the lived world in first-episode psychosis by situating the phenomenological analysis of delusions in the context of the person's life narrative.
Methods: In this qualitatively driven study, we recruited individuals with lived experience of delusions receiving care from three Early Intervention in Psychosis (EI…

Nurses' Ethical Decision-Making During the COVID-19 Pandemic in a Muslim Community: A Qualitative Study.
Background: Ethical decision-making was a major challenge for healthcare professionals during the COVID-19 pandemic, particularly in contexts where religion and law strongly influence clinical practice. Both deontological and consequentialist ethical frameworks guide medical decisions; however, balancing these approaches is especially difficult during crises.
Objective: This study aimed to explore the ethical decision-making experiences of intensive care nurses during the COVID-19 pandemic within a Muslim community in Iran.
Materials and methods: A qualitative content analysis was conducted based on in-depth, semi-structured interviews with 14 intensive care nurses.
Results: Three main themes emerged: (a) Humanitarian commitment involving actions beyond formal duties; (b) Nursing practice influenced by legal and organizational frameworks; and (c) Application of a consequentialist perspec…

Mapping the Content Landscape of Self-transcendent Emotional Experiences with Thematic Analysis and Hierarchical Clustering.
Self-transcendent emotions (STEs), including positive and threatening awe, compassion, admiration, elevation, gratitude, and love, expand one's focus beyond the self and foster a sense of connection with something larger (e.g., people, nature, a higher power). Questions remain about the content structure that differentiates or unifies these emotions. We conducted four studies in Brazil, analyzing 1,683 narratives from the general population to clarify the nature and range of STEs in this underrepresented context. Study 1 developed and validated items measuring these emotions in Brazilian Portuguese, particularly critical for awe, as it lacks a direct translation. In Study 2, a bottom-up, qualitative template analysis from participants' narratives yielded an initial coding template with 24 themes. Study 3 refined this template through qualitative coding, producing a final set of 34 unique…

How social media sharing drives consumption intention: the role of social media envy and social comparison orientation.
Background: Social media benign envy, an upward comparison-based and painful emotions associated with the motivation to improve oneself, has attracted increasing attention from researchers due to its ubiquitous and significant impact on social network users' intentions and behavior. However, the results of previous studies on whether material or experiential consumption is more likely to cause social media envy (treated as a single construct) have been inconsistent, and there is a lack of research on what triggers social media users to experience more intense benign envy and thus inspiring their consumption intentions. The purpose of this study is to investigate how the type and luxuriousness of shared consumption and viewer's social comparison orientation jointly affect social media users' consumption intentions through benign envy.
Methods: A 2 (type of consumption sharing: experientia…

Family-Centered Treatment Program for Problematic Gaming and Excessive Screen Use in a Clinical Child and Youth Population (FAME): Protocol for a Feasibility Pilot Mixed Method Study.
Background: Screen time among children and adolescents has increased dramatically, raising concerns about its impact on development and mental health. While research highlights both potential benefits and risks, excessive use has been linked to issues like anxiety, depression, and gaming addiction. Despite growing concern, effective interventions are scarce. Recognizing the importance of family dynamics in child development, we propose a family-centered program to address problematic gaming and excessive screen use in a clinical population. By involving both children and parents, we aim to create a more comprehensive approach to prevention and treatment.
Objective: This study aims to determine the possibility of distributing and evaluating a family-centered group program for problematic gaming and excessive screen use (FAME) in a clinical child and adolescent psychiatry (CAP) population.…

[Taboo subject of miscarriage? - Anchoring through mechanisms at the medical, social, and organisational level "It broke my heart and that's just the way it is ..."]
Introduction: Miscarriage is the most common complication of pregnancy. In this work, the experiences associated with miscarriage and their relevance for the women are analysed on different levels.
Method: In May 2023, 14 guided interviews were conducted with women. The text material obtained will be brought to a higher level of abstraction using Mayring's content analysis approach and then interpreted.
Results: The results of the study underpin the significance of a miscarriage as a dramatic experience and the assumption of a broad taboo experienced as stressful. The deliberately chosen exchange among like-minded people, the concealment of the pregnancy and subsequently the miscarriage for reasons of shame, self-protection from professional disadvantages, and the assumption of overburdening the partner do not weigh as heavily as those mechanisms that operate in the health sector: at thi…
