876 to 900 of 969Barriers to access to health care for newly resettled sub-Saharan refugees in Australia.
Objective: To determine barriers that affect access to health care for refugees from sub-Saharan Africa resettled in Sydney.
Design: Descriptive epidemiological study and survey.
Participants and setting: Parents of newly resettled refugee children seen at a tertiary hospital paediatric clinic between 10 June 2005 and 19 May 2006.
Main outcome measures: Socioeconomic indicators, health seeking behaviour, social barriers, and beliefs about health.
Results: Parents of 34 of a possible 35 families (97%) agreed to participate. Barriers to accessing health care include language barriers, financial handicap, lack of health information, not knowing where to seek help, and poor understanding of how to access health services. Most refugee families established connections with community and religious groups soon after arrival in Australia.
Conclusions: Our findings suggest that most refugee famili…

Waking experience affects sleep need in Drosophila.
Sleep is a vital, evolutionarily conserved phenomenon, whose function is unclear. Although mounting evidence supports a role for sleep in the consolidation of memories, until now, a molecular connection between sleep, plasticity, and memory formation has been difficult to demonstrate. We establish Drosophila as a model to investigate this relation and demonstrate that the intensity and/or complexity of prior social experience stably modifies sleep need and architecture. Furthermore, this experience-dependent plasticity in sleep need is subserved by the dopaminergic and adenosine 3',5'-monophosphate signaling pathways and a particular subset of 17 long-term memory genes.

Background: Social isolation, an objective lack of social connections, and loneliness, the subjective distress from perceived social deficits, are established risk factors for poor cancer prognosis. However, their associations with cancer incidence remain unclear. We investigated these associations using UK Biobank data.
Methods: We analyzed data from 354,537 UK Biobank participants aged 38-73. Participants linked to national health registries, without cancer within one year post-baseline, and with complete exposure and covariate data were included. The primary outcome was cancer incidence. Covariates were classified into demographic, physiological, socioeconomic, lifestyle, and health-related indicators. Cox proportional hazards models were used, with subgroup interaction analysis and mediation analyses performed.
Results: Here we show that 20,767(5.8%) of participants are isolated and …

Synergy of pandemics-social isolation is associated with worsened Parkinson severity and quality of life.
Social isolation and its deleterious effects on health increases with age in the general population. People with Parkinson's Disease (PWP) are no exception. Social isolation is a risk factor for worsened health outcomes and increased mortality. Symptoms such as depression and sleep dysfunction are adversely affected by loneliness. There is a paucity of research on social isolation in Parkinson's disease (PD), which is all the more critical now in the setting of social distancing due to COVID-19. The goal of this study was to survey individuals with PD to evaluate whether social isolation is associated with PD symptom severity and quality of life. Only individuals reporting a diagnosis of idiopathic PD were included in this analysis. The primary outcome measures were the Patient-Reported Outcomes in PD (PRO-PD) and questions from PROMIS Global related to social health. PRO-PD scores incre…

Association between musculoskeletal pain with social isolation and loneliness: analysis of the English Longitudinal Study of Ageing.
Introduction: Musculoskeletal pain is a prevalent health challenge for all age groups worldwide, but most notably in older adults. Social isolation is the consequence of a decrease in social network size with a reduction in the number of social contacts. Loneliness is the psychological embodiment of social isolation and represents an individual's perception of dissatisfaction in the quality or quantity of their social contacts. This study aims to determine whether a relationship exists between musculoskeletal pain and social isolation and loneliness.
Methods: A cross-sectional analysis of the English Longitudinal Study of Ageing (ELSA) cohort was undertaken. ELSA is a nationally representative sample of the non-institutionalised population of individuals aged 50 years and over based in England. Data were gathered on social isolation through the ELSA Social Isolation Index, loneliness thr…

Contribution of risk factors to excess mortality in isolated and lonely individuals: an analysis of data from the UK Biobank cohort study.
Background: The associations of social isolation and loneliness with premature mortality are well known, but the risk factors linking them remain unclear. We sought to identify risk factors that might explain the increased mortality in socially isolated and lonely individuals.
Methods: We used prospective follow-up data from the UK Biobank cohort study to assess self-reported isolation (a three-item scale) and loneliness (two questions). The main outcomes were all-cause and cause-specific mortality. We calculated the percentage of excess risk mediated by risk factors to assess the extent to which the associations of social isolation and loneliness with mortality were attributable to differences between isolated and lonely individuals and others in biological (body-mass index, systolic and diastolic blood pressure, and handgrip strength), behavioural (smoking, alcohol consumption, and phy…

Social Relationships and Health: The Toxic Effects of Perceived Social Isolation.
Research in social epidemiology suggests that the absence of positive social relationships is a significant risk factor for broad-based morbidity and mortality. The nature of these social relationships and the mechanisms underlying this association are of increasing interest as the population gets older and the health care costs associated with chronic disease escalate in industrialized countries. We review selected evidence on the nature of social relationships and focus on one particular facet of the connection continuum - the extent to which an individual feels isolated (i.e., feels lonely) in a social world. Evidence indicates that loneliness heightens sensitivity to social threats and motivates the renewal of social connections, but it can also impair executive functioning, sleep, and mental and physical well-being. Together, these effects contribute to higher rates of morbidity and…

Social regulation of gene expression in human leukocytes.
Background: Social environmental influences on human health are well established in the epidemiology literature, but their functional genomic mechanisms are unclear. The present study analyzed genome-wide transcriptional activity in people who chronically experienced high versus low levels of subjective social isolation (loneliness) to assess alterations in the activity of transcription control pathways that might contribute to increased adverse health outcomes in social isolates.
Results: DNA microarray analysis identified 209 genes that were differentially expressed in circulating leukocytes from 14 high- versus low-lonely individuals, including up-regulation of genes involved in immune activation, transcription control, and cell proliferation, and down-regulation of genes supporting mature B lymphocyte function and type I interferon response. Promoter-based bioinformatic analyses show…

Exploring Loneliness, Social Factors, and Clinical Correlates of C-reactive Protein in African American Breast Cancer Survivors.
Importance: African American women experience disproportionately high breast cancer morbidity and mortality, including early onset, more aggressive tumor subtypes, and poorer survival outcomes. Chronic psychosocial stress has been shown to dysregulate hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis and sympathetic nervous system activity, promoting low-grade systemic inflammation and altering immune signaling within the tumor microenvironment. However, few studies have examined how stress-related psychosocial factors, such as loneliness, contribute to inflammatory processes in African American breast cancer survivors.
Objective: To examine the association between loneliness and other social, socioeconomic, and clinical factors with C-Reactive Protein (CRP) levels, an established marker of systemic inflammation, in African American breast cancer survivors.
Design: Exploratory pilot, cross-sectional s…

Adolescent wellbeing after COVID-related school-closings.
Introduction: Research has shown that the COVID-19 pandemic and related lockdowns led to increased loneliness and decreased life-satisfaction among adolescents. However, the impact was not uniform, suggesting that certain resources may have served as protective factors. This study adopts a resource-based perspective to identify predictors of adolescent well-being after and at the end of the second COVID-related lockdown, focusing on self-efficacy, social support, and religiosity, as well as the role of a disposition to help.
Methods: Using data from a longitudinal sample of 171 German-speaking adolescents aged 15-18 y., assessed at four time points over 6 months, we analyzed which resources during the lockdown period were associated with life-satisfaction and loneliness at the final assessment.
Results: Our findings indicate that self-efficacy and general social support were significant …

Anger Rumination, Loneliness and Psychological Well-Being in Romantic Relationships: A Dyadic Model.
Anger rumination, characterized by persistent focus on angry thoughts and feelings, is a maladaptive emotional process that can undermine intimacy and relationship satisfaction. Psychological well-being is closely linked to relationship satisfaction, as positive relationship dynamics can enhance individual well-being, while relational distress may undermine it. Loneliness, as a potential interpersonal consequence of emotional dysregulation and reduced intimacy, may mediate the influence of anger rumination on psychological well-being. This study examines the direct and indirect relationships between anger rumination, loneliness, and psychological well-being in romantic relationships using the Actor-Partner Interdependence Model. A total of 313 heterosexual couples (N = 626) participated (mean age of females = 34.21, males = 36.70). Relationship types included dating, engaged, and married…

Reducing Loneliness and Improving Social Support among Older Adults through Different Modalities of Personal Voice Assistants.
This study examines the potential of AI-powered personal voice assistants (PVAs) in reducing loneliness and increasing social support among older adults. With the aging population rapidly expanding, innovative solutions are essential. Prior research has indicated the effectiveness of various interactive communication technologies (ICTs) in mitigating loneliness, but studies focusing on PVAs, particularly considering their modality (audio vs. video), are limited. This research aims to fill this gap by evaluating how voice assistants, in both audio and video formats, influence perceived loneliness and social support. This study examined the impact of voice assistant technology (VAT) interventions, both audio-based (A-VAT) and video-based (V-VAT), on perceived loneliness and social support among 34 older adults living alone. Over three months, participants engaged with Amazon Alexa™ PVA thr…

Robles TF (2024)MEDLINE-indexed journal, not yet read by usComprehensive psychoneuroendocrinology2 citations Interpersonal relationships, PNI, and health: Seeds in the 1980s, fruiting trees today.
In this contribution to the Special Issue, I highlight how Janice Kiecolt-Glaser's research in the 1980s planted the seeds for two areas of social relationships and health research: loneliness and intimate/marital relationships. I review the foundational "seed" studies from the mid-to late-1980s, the research "saplings" that sprouted and grew during the subsequent twenty years, and the "mature trees" that have gone on to fruit and grow their respective areas of inquiry over the past twenty years. In addition to highlighting the mature trees that have borne rich empirical fruit, my other goal for this contribution is to draw attention to ideas and concepts from Kiecolt-Glaser's work and writing that merit further conceptual and empirical examination in the next generation of research on social relationships, psychoneuroendocrinology, psychoneuroimmunology, and health.

An online experimental medicine trial on the effect of 28-day simvastatin administration on emotional processing, reward learning, working memory and salivary cortisol in healthy volunteers at risk for depression: OxSTEP protocol.
Background: Evidence suggests inflammation may be a key mechanism by which psychosocial stress, including loneliness, predisposes to depression. Observational and clinical studies have suggested simvastatin, with its anti-inflammatory properties, may have a potential use in the treatment of depression. Previous experimental medicine trials investigating 7-day use of statins showed conflicting results, with simvastatin displaying a more positive effect on emotional processing compared with atorvastatin. It is possible that statins require longer administration in predisposed individuals before showing the expected positive effects on emotional processing.
Aims: Here, we aim to test the neuropsychological effects of 28-day simvastatin administration versus placebo, in healthy volunteers at risk for depression owing to loneliness.
Method: This is a remote experimental medicine study. One hu…

Social Isolation: An Unequally Distributed Health Hazard.
Social isolation is a potent predictor of poor health, mortality, and dementia risk. A great deal of research across national contexts provides causal evidence for these linkages and identifies key explanatory mechanisms through which isolation affects health. Research on social isolation recognizes that some people are more likely than others to be isolated, but over the past several decades, researchers have focused primarily on the consequences of isolation for health rather than a systematic assessment of the social conditions that foster isolation over the life course. In this article, we review the available evidence on inequities in social isolation and develop a conceptual framework to guide future research on structural systems that fuel social isolation over the life course. Future work in this area has the potential to identify root causes of inequality in social isolation, as…

Risk factors for suicidal behaviour in late-life depression: A systematic review.
Background: Suicide is a leading cause of preventable death worldwide, with its peak of maximum incidence in later life. Depression often puts an individual at higher risk for suicidal behaviour. In turn, depression deserves particular interest in old age due to its high prevalence and dramatic impact on health and wellbeing.
Aim: To gather integrated evidence on the potential risk factors for suicide behaviour development in depressive older adults, and to examine the effects of depression treatment to tackle suicide behaviour in this population.
Methods: A systematic review of empirical studies, published from 2000 onwards, was conducted. Suicidal behaviour was addressed considering its varying forms (i.e., wish to die, ideation, attempt, and completed suicide).
Results: Thirty-five papers were selected for review, comprising both clinical and epidemiological studies. Most of studies f…

Chewing Revenge or Becoming Socially Desirable? Anger Rumination in Refugees and Immigrants Experiencing Racial Hostility: Latin-Americans in Spain.
This paper explores how real scenarios of racial hostility and discrimination trigger anger rumination tendencies in refugees, asylum seekers and immigrants (hereafter RASI). Undergoing discrimination often leads to the development of negative thoughts and behaviors, and to a loss of meaning and self-worth. This could make young RASI particularly vulnerable to being recruited and exploited by extremist groups as they search for identity. We developed a picture-elicitation instrument (the PEI) to provide professionals with a tool that could identify groups of RASI according to their reactions to discrimination scenarios and explore how racial hostility might influence withdrawal levels. The tool was applied with the Anger Rumination Scale (ARS_19) to 509 RASI of Latin American origin living in Spain. Four categories were identified, according to how RASI processed anger when observing dis…

Covid-fatigued? A longitudinal study of Norwegian older adults' psychosocial well-being before and during early and later stages of the COVID-19 pandemic.
As the pandemic continues, many older adults are facing prolonged isolation and stress while having less access to traditional ways of coping. There is widespread concern that the situation is increasingly taking its toll on older adults' psychological and social well-being. We use linear mixed models to examine psychosocial impacts and predictors thereof among older Norwegians in early and later stages of the pandemic. Longitudinal data were collected online in the Norwegian Counties Public Health Survey right before the pandemic and in June and November-December 2020 in two counties (baseline n = 4,104; age 65-92). Outcomes include loneliness (single item, UCLA3), psychological ill-being (worried, anxious, depressed), and psychological well-being (satisfied, engaged, happy). From before to three months into the pandemic men's psychosocial well-being remained stable, whereas women's sli…

Grandparents' Mental Health and Lived Experiences while Raising Their Grandchildren at the Forefront of COVID-19 in Saudi Arabia.
Understanding grandparents' lived experiences and healthy aging is essential to designing efficient, effective, and safe services to support a family structure in which grandparents care for their grandchildren. However, no study to date has explored this concept in an Arab and Muslim country during a pandemic. The purpose of this study was to examine grandparents' experiences raising their grandchildren to provide recommendations for needed mental health interventions during and after COVID-19. We used a phenomenological approach to gain a detailed and in-depth understanding of the lived experiences of 15 grandparents caring for their grandchildren. This study shows the need for support service interventions (support groups, health professional support, and respite care) for grandparents in Saudi Arabia, especially during global crises like COVID-19, that enhance social distance and soc…
