Upon his arrival, Musaylimah said to him, "What has been revealed to your friend (Muhammad ﷺ) during this time?" 'Amr said, "A short and concise Surah has been revealed to him." Musaylimah then said, "What is it?" 'Amr replied; وَالْعَصْرِ - إِنَّ الْإِنسَانَ لَفِي خُسْرٍ - إِلَّا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا وَعَمِلُوا الصَّالِحَاتِ وَتَوَاصَوْا بِالْحَقِّ وَتَوَاصَوْا بِالصَّبْرِ (By Al-'Asr. Verily, man is in loss. A comprehensive literature search identified 150 studies that met inclusion criteria (745 effect sizes; total n = 215,212). Data were analyzed using inverse-variance weighted random effects meta-analysis. Mean effect sizes from 55 meta-analyses provided evidence that self-regulation relates to 25 discrete outcomes
A review to characterise and map the growth mindset theory in health professions education.: Introduction: Growth mindset is a motivation theory proposed by Carol Dweck that posits our beliefs about intelligence, and the ability to change mindsets can have impacts on how we approach challenges, respond to criticism challenges and orient our goals. This study characterised articles on growth mindset theory in health professions education to: summarise the aspects of growth mindset being researched, describe the discussed benefits of growth mindset theory and outline strategies discussed
Do Grittier People Have Greater Subjective Well-Being? A Meta-Analysis.: The present study conducted a meta-analysis to examine the relation between grit and subjective well-being (SWB). The association between grit (i.e., overall grit, perseverance of effort, and consistency of interest) and SWB (i.e., positive affect, negative affect, happiness, depression, life satisfaction, job satisfaction, and school satisfaction) were synthesized across 83 studies and 66,518 participants. The results based on a random-effects model showed a substantial correlation between over
Mind-sets matter: a meta-analytic review of implicit theories and self-regulation.: This review builds on self-control theory (Carver & Scheier, 1998) to develop a theoretical framework for investigating associations of implicit theories with self-regulation. This framework conceptualizes self-regulation in terms of 3 crucial processes: goal setting, goal operating, and goal monitoring. In this meta-analysis, we included articles that reported a quantifiable assessment of implicit theories and at least 1 self-regulatory process or outcome. With a random effects approach used, m

Modeling the relationships between growth language mindset, L2 grit, and foreign language learning burnout.
While the existing literature acknowledges the existence of foreign language learning burnout (FLLB) and its deleterious effect on English as a foreign language (EFL) learners, the protective factors that may alleviate FLLB in EFL contexts remain largely unexplored. The current study addresses this gap by examining the impact of learners' growth language mindset (GLM) on FLLB by employing the structural equation modeling (SEM). Furthermore, the mediating role of L2 grit in the relationship between GLM and FLLB was scrutinized. To achieve these objectives, 840 Chinese EFL learners were recruited to complete questionnaires encompassing scales assessing GLM, L2 grit, and FLLB. The results unveiled that learners' GLM and L2 grit were significantly and negatively associated with FLLB. The SEM analysis indicated that GLM exerted a negative predictive effect on EFL learners' FLLB. Additionally,…

Grit and perceived teacher support associations with Chinese language achievement: the mediating role of emotion in Thai high school Chinese classrooms.
Introduction: Chinese language learning is gaining considerable attention from learners worldwide, leading many countries, including Thailand, to make it a mandatory subject in primary and secondary education. However, many Chinese learners lack interest in learning Chinese, resulting in inadequate Chinese language proficiency. Chinese language learners' grit and emotional commitment to Chinese language learning are key factors in determining their language learning success, and the support of Chinese as a Foreign Language teachers is also crucial in this process. Thus, this cross-sectional study investigates the associations of students' grit and perceived teacher support with their Chinese language achievement while considering the potential mediating role of emotions (enjoyment, anxiety, and boredom). Methods: The study included 665 high school students from two public and three priva…

Gritty Heart: Improved Heart Rate Variability Markers of Adaptive Physiological Response in Grit.
Grit is a personality trait, conceptualized as perseverance of effort and consistency of interests in long-term goals. Previous research has shown that grit is associated with various positive outcomes, including well-being. Despite extensive research on grit, most studies relied on self-reported measures rather than objective measures. To address this gap, our study investigated the relationship between grit and physiological responses, focusing on resting-state heart rate variability (HRV)-a physiological marker of well-being and adaptability. Additionally, we examined whether this relationship was unique to grit and not explained by other related psychological constructs (i.e., conscientiousness and self-control). A total of 206 healthy college students participated in this study (Mage = 21.03, SD = 2.48, age range = 18-33; 111 women). Results of hierarchical regression analyses showe…

The effect of grit on L2 willingness to communicate among Chinese junior high school students: an analysis of the differential roles of foreign language enjoyment and anxiety.
With the burgeoning research on positive psychology, grit has gradually attracted scholarly attention in the field of L2 acquisition, and it has been shown to be a significant positive predictor of L2 achievements and outcomes. However, despite being an important factor in L2 acquisition, grit has rarely been incorporated as a research variable in prior research on willingness to communicate in a second language (L2 WTC), especially among Chinese teenagers who find themselves in a foundational stage of developing their L2 communicative competence. Based on a survey among 238 Chinese junior high school students, this study analyzed the effect of their grit on their L2 WTC, and explored the differential roles of foreign language enjoyment (FLE) and anxiety (FLA) in their interactions. The results revealed that: (1) perseverance of effort (PE), consistency of interest (CI) and FLE had signi…

Neural basis responsible for effect of grit on procrastination: The interaction between the self-regulation and motivation neural pathways.
Procrastination has a detrimental impact on academic performance, health, and subjective well-being. Previous studies indicated that grit was negatively related to procrastination. However, the underlying neural basis of this relationship remains unclear. To address this issue, we utilized voxel-based morphometry (VBM) and resting-state functional connectivity (RSFC) analysis to identify the neural substrates of how is grit linked to procrastination. Behavioral results showed that procrastination was negatively associated with grit. VBM analysis revealed that gray matter volume (GMV) in the left precuneus was positively associated with the consistency of interest (CI), a subcomponent of grit, while the right medial orbital frontal cortex (mOFC) was positively correlated with the perseverance of effort (PE), another subcomponent of grit. Moreover, the RSFC analysis indicated that both pre…

Health-promoting lifestyle and life satisfaction in full-time employed adults with congenital heart disease: grit as a mediator.
Aims: Enhancing life satisfaction is vital for adults with congenital heart disease (ACHD). Life satisfaction potentially correlates with a health-promoting lifestyle and grit. However, the mediating role of grit-a trait marked by perseverance and long-term goal-oriented passion-between a health-promoting lifestyle and life satisfaction in ACHD remains unverified. This study aimed to examine the relationships between health-promoting lifestyle, grit, and life satisfaction in full-time employed ACHD and to confirm the mediating role of grit. Methods and results: A total of 181 full-time employed ACHD aged 20-59 years with patient-reported New York Heart Association classes I-IV were recruited from two medical centres in northern Taiwan. Participants completed questionnaires, including the short version of the Chinese Health-Promoting Lifestyle Profile Scale, Grit-10 Scale, and Satisfactio…

Are Grit and Self-Control Associated With Patient-Reported Outcomes Following Spine Surgery?
Background: Grit, defined as perseverance and passion for long-term goals, and self-control, defined as the capacity to regulate impulses in the presence of momentarily gratifying temptations or diversion, have shown to be predictors of professional achievement. Their role in health care outcomes is less well understood. Purpose: We sought to determine whether grit and self-control are associated with patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs) following spine surgery. Methods: We conducted a retrospective review of adult patients who underwent cervical or lumbar procedures by a single fellowship-trained spine surgeon between March 2017 and October 2020. We included patients who underwent anterior cervical discectomy and fusion, cervical disk replacement, minimally invasive laminectomy/laminoplasty (MI-D), or minimally invasive transforaminal lumbar interbody fusion (MI-TLIF) with minimum …

Sparking Virtuous Cycles: A Longitudinal Study of Subjective Well-Being and Grit During Early Adolescence.
In cross-sectional research, subjective well-being and grit are found to be positively correlated. Their mutually reinforcing effects are particularly relevant for youth entering early adolescence because, during this developmental period, both well-being and grit have been shown to predict consequential outcomes later in life. However, their mutual relation has not yet been investigated in early adolescence. This study, therefore, examined the possibility of a virtuous cycle linking subjective well-being and grit during early adolescence. Self-report questionnaires of grit and subjective well-being were completed by N = 5291 children in China (47.6% girls; initial Mage = 9.69, SDage = 0.59) on six occasions over 3 academic years. In random-intercept cross-lagged panel models (RI-CLPMs), within-person changes in grit predicted within-person changes in subjective well-being 6 months later…

Grit and Second Language Learning Engagement: The Mediating Role of Affect Balance.
The study of the relationship between key psychological attributes of learners and their engagement in second language (L2) learning helps to understand the critical personality mechanisms influencing language learning. The present study examined the L2 learning engagement from the perspectives of grit (i.e., consistent efforts and interests devoted to a long-term goal) and affect balance (a notion that takes into account both positive and negative emotions concurrently, assessing and evaluating which side holds more significance or influence). A cohort of English L2 learners (N = 394) participated in an online survey aimed at gauging their levels of grit, affect balance, and engagement in L2 learning. The results indicated that grit and affect balance were significantly correlated with behavioral engagement and affective engagement in L2 learning. However, among the two components of gr…

Teacher support and its impact on ESL student engagement in blended learning: The mediating effects of L2 grit and intended effort.
Background: In the shifting paradigm of English as a Foreign Language (EFL) instruction, blended learning has become increasingly prevalent, necessitating understanding factors that drive student engagement. The research delves into the intricate interaction between teacher support and student engagement, postulating that L2 grit and intended effort function as mediators within this dynamic. Methods: We employed a cross-sectional design involving a sample of 712 EFL students engaged in blended learning courses. Through quantitative analysis, we measured the constructs of teacher support, L2 grit, intended effort, and student engagement with validated scales. Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) was applied to investigate the relationships between these variables and to test the hypothesized mediation effects. Results: The results demonstrated that teacher support correlated with higher lev…

Reliability and validity of simple Chinese version of grit scale for elementary school students.
Background: The Grit scale (GS-12) is a widely used rating scale that assess passion and perseverance. The present study aimed to evaluate the reliability and validity of simple Chinese Version of Grit Scale (GS-SC) among Chinese adolescents. Methods: Seven hundred one primary school students were recruited as Sample 1. Item analysis and exploratory factor analysis (EFA) were conducted on Sample 1 to preliminarily examine the structure of the scale. Sample 2 consisted of 5,384 primary school students. Confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) and verification of reliability and validity were conducted on Sample 2 to establish a formal scale and further verify the psychometric properties by applying item response theory (IRT). Results: EFA and CFA revealed a clear two-factor structure. The results demonstrated that the Simplified Chinese Version of Grit Scale had adequate internal consistency an…

Does Grit Compensate for Family Background Disadvantage in Predicting Mental Health Difficulties? A Longitudinal Study of Chinese Migrant and Urban Children.
The significant population of Chinese rural-to-urban migrant children has sparked considerable domestic and international concern regarding their disadvantaged family circumstances and their escalating prevalence of internalizing and externalizing problems. Derived from the resource substitution hypothesis, non-cognitive factors such as personality traits may act as "substitution" resources for educational outcomes of children from less privileged families. Yet, the compensatory role of personality traits as substitution resources in children's mental health has received limited attention, including that of migrant children. This study examined the interplay of trait-like grit and family SES on emotional and conduct problems among Chinese migrant and urban children. The current sample consisted of 770 migrant children (Mage = 10.45 and SDage = 0.68 years; 38.4% girls) and their 222 urban…

Effects of grit on medical students' wellbeing during clerkships: a longitudinal observational cohort study.
Introduction: In medical education, the clerkship phase is a demanding period during which medical students learn to navigate the responsibilities of medical school and clinical medicine. Grit, a personal quality regarded as a non-cognitive trait, refers to perseverance and passion; specifically, it represents the ability to endure hardship and work industriously toward a goal. Most studies analysed grit as a single concept and few studies have investigated the effect of grit on the well-being of medical students through the whole-specialty training (i.e. surgical and non-surgical specialty rotations) required in clinical clerkships. Therefore, this study investigated whether associations exist between medical students' grit, measured by the two subconstructs of perseverance and passion, and their well-being during clerkships in surgical and non-surgical specialty units. Methods: This on…

Grit and academic resilience during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Grit, a non-cognitive skill that indicates perseverance and passion for long-term goals, has been shown to predict academic achievement. This paper provides evidence that grit also predicts student outcomes during the challenging period of the Covid-19 pandemic. We use a unique dataset from a digital learning platform in the United Arab Emirates to construct a behavioral measure of grit. We find that controlling for baseline achievement, students who were grittier according to this measure before the pandemic, register lower declines in math and science scores during the coronavirus period. Using machine learning, behavioral data obtained from the platform prior to the pandemic can explain 77% of the variance in academic resilience. A survey measure of grit coming from the same students, on the other hand, does not have significant predictive power over performance changes. Our findings …

The role of emotional quotients and adversity quotients in career success.
Career success has been considered equally important for both personal and organizational development. The purpose of the current study was to examine how trait emotional quotient (EQ) and adversity quotient (AQ) contribute to individuals' objective career success (job position) and subjective career success (organizational commitment). Participants included 256 Chinese adults who completed four measurements-the Self-Reported Emotional Intelligence Test, Resilience Scale, Grit Scale, and the Affective, Continuance, and Normative Commitment Scale-and provided demographic information. After validating the four scales used in this study, multiple regression analysis revealed that only one aspect of trait EQ (regulation of emotion) positively predicted one component of organizational commitment (affective commitment). Adversity quotient was measured on two dimensions: resilience and grit. On…
