126 to 150 of 344General procrastination and bedtime procrastination as serial mediators of the relationship between temporal perspective and sleep outcomes.
Adequate and sufficient sleep is essential for good health, effective functioning, and well-being, yet recent trends show increasing sleep deprivation, especially among adolescents and young adults. General procrastination and bedtime procrastination understood as the tendency to delay going to bed without external pressure, may contribute to sleep deprivation and fatigue. This study investigated how individual differences in time perspective are related to sleep sufficiency and daytime fatigue, two different sleep outcomes. For these relationships, the possible role of an intermediate pathway leading through general procrastination and then through bedtime procrastination was also examined. Zimbardo Time Perspective Inventory, Irrational Procrastination Scale, Bedtime Procrastination Scale, and Sleep Inventory were completed online by 399 university students (89% females) between the ag…

Bedtime procrastination mediates the relation between anxiety and sleep problems.
The prevalence of sleep problems is high in primary care patients and in anxious individuals. This study assessed whether total sleep time and bedtime procrastination mediated the association between anxiety and sleep problems. We predicted higher anxiety would be negatively associated with total sleep time and positively associated with bedtime procrastination and sleep problems, and these variables would statistically mediate the association between anxiety and sleep problems. Participants were 308 adult primary care patients, predominantly female (non-Hispanic White = 158, Latinx = 111, mean age = 33.30), who initiated behavioral health services at an integrated primary care clinic. Patients completed a questionnaire regarding psychological health and sleep behaviors. Using structural equation modeling, we found higher anxiety related to higher sleep problems, partially mediated by be…

"Fully recharged" evenings? The effect of evening cyber leisure on next-day vitality and performance through sleep quantity and quality, bedtime procrastination, and psychological detachment, and the moderating role of mindfulness.
Aligning with the recovery perspective, we propose a dual-path model to illustrate the effects of employees' evening cyber leisure on next-day work outcomes, namely, psychological vitality and performance. We argue that evening cyber leisure has contradicting effects on next-day performance and vitality through its effects on bedtime procrastination and psychological detachment, and in turn, sleep quantity and sleep quality. We also propose that trait mindfulness acts as an important boundary condition of the indirect effects of evening cyber leisure. We used an experience sampling methodology to collect 3 surveys per day for 10 days from 155 R&D employees of a biotech company. Our findings suggest that cyber leisure has a negative indirect effect on sleep quantity and sleep quality via bedtime procrastination, and a positive indirect effect on sleep quantity and sleep quality via evenin…

An Exploratory Study on Sleep Procrastination: Bedtime vs. While-in-Bed Procrastination.
Sleep Procrastination literature has focused on the behaviors individuals engage in before going to bed (Bedtime Procrastination) but not on the behaviors individuals engage in after going to bed (While-in-Bed Procrastination). The main goal of this study is to explore whether this While-in-Bed procrastination is a novel phenomenon that adds to the Sleep Procrastination literature. The study was conducted online with 400 high school students (Mage = 16.56; 139 males) recruited through personal contacts and social media. The Bedtime procrastination scale was adapted and validated for this sample, whereas the While-in-Bed Procrastination scale was developed for this study. Data show a low correlation (r = 0.158 **) between Bedtime and While-in-Bed Procrastination scales, suggesting that Sleep Procrastination may be composed of the two facets. Additionally, results showed that more Bedtime …

When time and self-control collide: The moderating role of procrastination in the relationship between circadian functioning and depressive symptoms.
Depression is highly prevalent and increasingly linked to circadian functioning and self-regulation. Yet little is known about how specific behaviors, such as procrastination, interact with chronotype dimensions to influence vulnerability to depressive symptoms. This study examined whether procrastination moderates associations between multidimensional chronotype and depressive symptoms in a large adult sample (N = 3606, aged 20-60). Participants completed self-report measures of chronotype, depressive symptoms, procrastination, and conscientiousness. Chronotype was assessed across three dimensions: Morning Affect (MA), Eveningness (EV), and Distinctness (DI). Results showed that lower MA and higher DI - reflecting greater daily energy fluctuations - were strong predictors of depressive symptoms. Procrastination significantly moderated these relationships by increasing overall levels of …

Sleep health and associated factors among undergraduates during the COVID-19 in China: A two-wave network analysis.
Using network analysis, the current study investigated the pathways that underlie selected components of sleep health and their changes over time. Undergraduates (N = 1423; 80.60% female) completed a two-wave survey, sleep health (i.e. chronotypologies (CTs), sleep procrastination (SP), sleep quality (SQ)), psychological distress (PD), emotion regulation (ER), self-control (SC), problematic smartphone use (PSU) were measured. CTs, SP, and SQ formed a spatially contiguous pattern that remained unchanged in both waves. ER and PD node increased its strength, betweenness, and closeness in the network, while the link between the two was strengthened at T2. PSU was connected to SP, but not to CTs and SQ during both waves. In the context of the network approach, SP had the highest strength, and its associations with other dimensions of individual sleep may represent key factors in understanding…

Neural basis responsible for effect of grit on procrastination: The interaction between the self-regulation and motivation neural pathways.
Procrastination has a detrimental impact on academic performance, health, and subjective well-being. Previous studies indicated that grit was negatively related to procrastination. However, the underlying neural basis of this relationship remains unclear. To address this issue, we utilized voxel-based morphometry (VBM) and resting-state functional connectivity (RSFC) analysis to identify the neural substrates of how is grit linked to procrastination. Behavioral results showed that procrastination was negatively associated with grit. VBM analysis revealed that gray matter volume (GMV) in the left precuneus was positively associated with the consistency of interest (CI), a subcomponent of grit, while the right medial orbital frontal cortex (mOFC) was positively correlated with the perseverance of effort (PE), another subcomponent of grit. Moreover, the RSFC analysis indicated that both pre…

Beyond prevention: Regulating responses to self-regulation failure to avoid a set-back effect.
Despite having good intentions, people fail at times to self-regulate. Most of these instances of everyday self-regulation failure are in themselves trivial. However, the ensuing chain of attributions, thoughts, and subsequent behaviors that people experience after an instance of failure may be detrimental to their long-term self-regulation success. In two studies, we examined the potential of intervening in the aftermath of failure to prevent this so-called "setback effect" by instructing people that setbacks may occur and to attribute future incidents of failure to external causes. In Study 1, we tested whether the intervention indeed decreased the frequency of self-regulation failure in the context of dieting and procrastination. In Study 2, we aimed to replicate the findings from Study 1 in the context of procrastination, and we explored the mediating role of self-efficacy. In both s…

Neural markers of procrastination in white matter microstructures and networks.
More than 15% of adults suffer from pathological procrastination, which leads to substantial harm to their mental and psychiatric health. Our previous work demonstrated the role of three neuroanatomical networks as neural substrates of procrastination, but their potential interaction remains unknown. Three large-scale independent samples (total n = 901) were recruited. In sample A, tract-based spatial statistics (TBSS) and connectome-based graph-theoretical analysis was conducted to probe association between topological properties of white matter (WM) network and procrastination. In sample B, the above analysis was reproduced to demonstrate replicability. In sample C, machine learning models were built to predict individual procrastination. TBSS results showed a negative association between procrastination and WM integrity of limbic-prefrontal connection, and a positive relationship betw…

Procrastination as a Self-Regulation Failure: The Role of Impulsivity and Intrusive Thoughts.
Procrastination has been described as the quintessence of self-regulatory failure. This study examines the relationships between this self-regulatory failure and other manifestations of self-regulation problems, namely impulsivity and intrusive thoughts. One hundred and forty-one participants completed questionnaires assessing procrastination, impulsivity (in particular, the urgency and lack of perseverance dimensions), and intrusive thoughts (i.e., rumination and daydreaming). Main results show that urgency mediated the association between rumination and procrastination, whereas rumination did not mediate the relation between urgency and procrastination. Lack of perseverance mediated the association between daydreaming and procrastination, and daydreaming mediated the relation between lack of perseverance and procrastination. This study highlights the role of impulsivity and intrusive t…

The neural substrates of procrastination: A voxel-based morphometry study.
Procrastination is a pervasive phenomenon across different cultures and brings about lots of serious consequences, including performance, subjective well-being, and even public policy. However, little is known about the neural substrates of procrastination. In order to shed light upon this question, we investigated the neuroanatomical substrates of procrastination across two independent samples using voxel-based morphometry (VBM) method. The whole-brain analysis showed procrastination was positively correlated with the graymatter (GM) volume of clusters in the parahippocampal gyrus (PHG) and the orbital frontal cortex (OFC), while negatively correlated with the GM volume of clusters in the inferior frontal gyrus (IFG) and the middle frontal gyrus (MFG) in sample one (151 participants). We further conducted a verification procedure on another sample (108 participants) using region-of-inte…
