176 to 200 of 344The combined ADHD profile faces the greatest risk of delay, depletion and disengagement in university students.
Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) symptoms are increasingly recognized in adulthood, particularly among university students, yet their distinct psychological correlates remain underexplored. Using a cross-sectional design, this study examined Hungarian college students (N = 1,879, aged between 18 and 35 years) who responded online to a set of questionnaires that included the Adult ADHD Self-Report Scale, Procrastination Scale, Higher Education Retention Scale and Ego-Depletion Scale. We applied k-means cluster analysis to classify students into four ADHD-related groups (Combined, Inattentive, Hyperactive-Impulsive, Low-symptom) based on symptom criteria. Consequently, we compared these clusters across six theoretically relevant self-regulatory outcomes: maladaptive and adaptive procrastination, maladaptive and adaptive perfectionism, ego depletion and dropout intention. A m…

Lower metacognitive abilities predict procrastination: a cross-sectional study of a healthy adult sample.
BACKGROUND: Procrastination, the tendency to delay tasks despite negative consequences, is a widespread issue linked to poor mental health and reduced daily functioning. While often attributed to self-regulation failures, the specific cognitive mechanisms underlying procrastination remain unclear. This study investigates the role of executive functions (EF), measured through both self-report and performance-based tests, in predicting procrastination in adults. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted with 108 adults (22–65 years) using the Irrational Procrastination Scale (IPS) to measure procrastination. EF was assessed using the self-report measure Behavior Rating Inventory of Executive Function-Adult version (BRIEF-A), which includes nine subscales organized in three factors (Behavior Regulation, Emotional Regulation, and Metacognition), and five performance-based tests assessin…

Exploring common and distinct neural basis of procrastination and impulsivity through elastic net regression.
Prior work highlighted that procrastination and impulsivity shared a common neuroanatomical basis in the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex, implying a tight relationship between these traits. However, theorists hold that procrastination is motivated by avoiding aversiveness, while impulsivity is driven by approaching immediate pleasure. Hence, exploring the common and distinct neural basis underlying procrastination and impulsivity through functional neuroimaging becomes imperative. To address this, we employed elastic net regression to examine the links between whole-brain resting-state functional connectivity and these traits in 822 university students from China. Results showed that the functional connections between the default network and the visual network were positively associated with both traits, indicating that the dysfunction of higher-order cognition (eg self-control) may accou…

Perfectionism and alcohol-related problems: The role of procrastination.
Objective: College drinking is a significant individual and societal problem, and thus, identifying risk factors to alcohol-related problems has been an important line of inquiry. Adding to this rich literature, the current study examined whether perfectionism dimensions were associated with alcohol-related problems and whether a poor self-regulation process linked these associations.
Participants: A total of 410 university students completed measures pertaining to perfectionism, procrastination, and negative consequences of alcohol use.
Methods: Parallel mediation models were tested.
Results: There was support for an indirect effect in the association between perfectionistic concerns and alcohol-related problems through susceptibility to temptation but not through pure procrastination or irrational procrastination. Perfectionistic strivings dimension was not associated with alcohol-rela…

Association between procrastination and learning strategies in medical students in a hybrid problem-based and lecture-based learning curriculum.
Background: Procrastination is characterized by the deliberate postponement of assigned educational tasks and is correlated with low academic achievement and depression. Concern about procrastination is particularly high among medical students, as it has a strong association with aspects such as low self-efficacy, lack of organization, low intrinsic motivation, inefficient effort regulation and time management problems. On the other hand, it was found that students' use of study strategies is significantly related to better academic results. The relationship between students' tendency to procrastinate and the adoption of effective study strategies remains little explored, leaving a critical space for investigation. This study aims to fill this gap by exploring how procrastination affects the selection and effectiveness of study strategies adopted by students.
Methods: This cross-sectiona…

The triple psychological and neural bases underlying procrastination: Evidence based on a two-year longitudinal study.
The triple brain anatomical network model of procrastination theorized procrastination as the result of psychological and neural dysfunction implicated in self-control, emotion regulation and episodic prospection. However, no studies have provided empirical evidence for such model. To address this issue, we designed a two-wave longitudinal study where participants underwent the resting-state scanning and completed the questionnaires at two time-points that spanned 2-year apart (T1, n = 457; T2, n = 457). Using the cross-lagged panel network modeling (CLPN), we found that triple psychological components at T1, including self-control, emotion regulation (i.e., reappraisal) and episodic prospection, negatively predicted procrastination at T2 in the temporal network. Moreover, the CLPN modeling found that functional connectivity between networks accounting for episodic prospection (EP) and e…

Procrastination and health: A longitudinal test of the roles of stress and health behaviours.
Objectives: Procrastination is a common form of self-regulation failure that a growing evidence base suggests can confer risk for poor health outcomes, especially when it becomes habitual. However, the proposed linkages of chronic procrastination to health outcomes have not been tested over time or accounted for the contributions of higher-order personality factors linked to both chronic procrastination and health-related outcomes. We addressed these issues by examining the role of chronic procrastination in health outcomes over time in which the hypothesized links of procrastination to health problems operate via stress and health behaviours.
Design: Three-wave longitudinal study with 1-month intervals.
Methods: Participants (N = 379) completed measures of trait procrastination at Time 1, and measures of health behaviours, stress and health problems at each time point, in a lab setting.…

Neural connectome features of procrastination: Current progress and future direction.
Procrastination refers to an irrationally delay for intended courses of action despite of anticipating a negative consequence due to this delay. Previous studies tried to reveal the neural substrates of procrastination in terms of connectome-based biomarkers. Based on this, we proposed a unified triple brain network model for procrastination and pinpointed out what challenges we are facing in understanding neural mechanism of procrastination. Specifically, based on neuroanatomical features, the unified triple brain network model proposed that connectome-based underpinning of procrastination could be ascribed to the abnormalities of self-control network (i.e., dorsolateral prefrontal cortex, DLPFC), emotion-regulation network (i.e., orbital frontal cortex, OFC), and episodic prospection network (i.e., para-hippocampus cortex, PHC). Moreover, based on the brain functional features, procras…

How Did You Sleep Tonight? The Relevance of Sleep Quality and Sleep-Wake Rhythm for Procrastination at Work.
Recent studies have highlighted the relevance of sleep for procrastination at work. Procrastination at work is defined as the irrational delay of the initiation or completion of work-related activities. In line with recent studies, we offer a self-regulation perspective on procrastination. We argue that procrastination is an outcome of depleted self-regulatory resources and that the restoration of self-regulatory resources during high-quality sleep at night would prevent procrastination.
Aims: In an attempt to further develop this line of research, the current study aimed to achieve a broader understanding of the relevance of sleep and circadian rhythm for procrastination. Therefore, we explored the effect of sleep quality on procrastination for different chronotypes. We also considered the shift to daylight saving time as a phenomenon that aggravates circadian misalignment and thereby l…

Playing a video game is more than mere procrastination.
Background: Procrastination is seen as a severe problem among young people, and many factors have been claimed to be associated with it, playing video games being one of them. One of the reasons why video games might be related to procrastination is their ability to offer instant gratification and feedback, while at the same time offer distractions from less tempting and rewarding tasks. It is not yet agreed on whether or not video game players are more prone towards procrastination and discounting of future rewards.
Method: Over 500 participants across two studies completed two surveys on video gaming habits, as well as a measurement of procrastination tendencies. In study 1 participants performed an experiential discounting task, while participants in study 2 performed the 5-trial adjusting delay discounting task, both tasks assessing preference for delayed larger rewards.
