Honey and a mixture of honey, beeswax, and olive oil-propolis extract in treatment of chemotherapy-induced oral mucositis: a randomized controlled pilot study.
In spite of being one of the most investigated subjects among supportive care in cancer, no therapy has been found effective in treatment of chemotherapy-induced oral mucositis. Based on the observations that honey bees products have anti-inflammatory and wound healing effects, the present study tried to evaluate the effect of topical application of honey and a mixture of honey, olive oil-propolis extract, and beeswax (HOPE) in treatment of oral mucositis. Apoptotic activities of thymoquinone, an active ingredient of black seed (Nigella sativa), in cervical cancer cell lines.
Thymoquinone (TQ) is the main constituent of black seed (Nigella sativa, spp) essential oil which shows promising in vitro and in vivo anti-neoplastic activities in different tumor cell lines. However, to date there are only a few reports regarding the apoptotic effects of TQ on cervical cancer cells. Here, we report that TQ stimulated distinct apoptotic pathways in two human cervical cell lines, Siha and C33A. TQ markedly induced apoptosis as demonstrated by cell cycle analysis in both cell lines. Moreover, quantitative PCR revealed that TQ induced apoptosis in Siha cells through p53-dependent pathway as shown by elevated level of p53-mediated apoptosis target genes, whereas apoptosis in C33A cells was mainly associated with the activation of caspase-3. These results support previous findings on TQ as a potential therapeutic agent for human cervical cancer.

Comparative effects of using black seed (Nigella sativa), cumin seed (Cuminum cyminum), probiotic or prebiotic on growth performance, blood haematology and serum biochemistry of broiler chicks.

Unlocking the therapeutic potential of Nigella sativa extract: phytochemical analysis and revealing antimicrobial and antioxidant marvels.

The impact of oleuropein, hydroxytyrosol, and tyrosol on cardiometabolic risk factors: a meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials.
The so-called Mediterranean diet, with olive oil as a key component, is effective in reducing cardiometabolic disease risk. Olive oil consumption improves blood pressure, insulin levels and resistance, supporting heart health and glycemic control. Its phenolic compounds, including oleuropein (OLE), hydroxytyrosol (HT), and tyrosol (TYR) are hypothesized to likely contribute to these benefits. Thus, this meta-analysis evaluated the clinical effects of dietary supplementation with OLE, HT, and TYR on cardiometabolic outcomes. High-performance liquid chromatography quantification of principal antioxidants in black seed (Nigella sativa L.) phytopharmaceuticals.
A new, simple, sensitive, rapid, and accurate isocratic RP-HPLC method was developed and validated for simultaneous analysis of the principal antioxidants of Nigella sativa, i.e., thymoquinone (TQ), carvacrol (CR), and its isomer thymol (THY), in different phytopharmaceuticals. The mobile phase was water-methanol (40 + 60, v/v) at a flow rate of 1.5 mL/min. Quantification was achieved with UV detection at 254 nm, based on peak area. The method was validated for linearity, accuracy, precision, selectivity, and robustness. The proposed method is stability-indicating for determination of TQ in the presence of its degradants. The LOD and LOQ (microg/mL) were, respectively, 0.006 and 0.021 for TQ, 0.002 and 0.006 for CR, and 0.027 and 0.090 for THY. The effect of wet-cupping therapy (hijama) in modulating autoimmune activity of Hashimoto's thyroiditis: A pilot controlled study.
Objectives: To investigate the possible effects of wet-cupping therapy (hijama) on autoimmune activity and thyroid hormonal profiles of Hashimoto's disease (HD) patients.
Methods: A prospective pilot controlled trial was carried out among adult females following HD at the Endocrinology Clinic of King Abdulaziz University Hospital, Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, from February 2014 until March 2017. A total of 13 patients (intervention group) underwent 3 hijama sessions at 3-week interval with a 6-month follow-up. Activity of preparations from Spilanthes oleracea, propolis, Nigella sativa, and black garlic on different microorganisms involved in oral diseases and on total human salivary bacteria: A pilot study.
Due to continuous rise in antibiotic resistance, there is a need for alternative treatment options to reduce the levels of oral pathogens for the maintenance of oral as well as overall health. The aim of this study was to evaluate the in vitro antibacterial potential of tinctures of Spilanthes oleracea and propolis, Nigella seed oil, and an ethanolic extract of black garlic on microorganisms involved in oral diseases. Both the minimum inhibitory concentration assay and the minimum bactericidal/fungicidal concentration assay were used in this study. Inhibition effects against total human salivary bacteria were also determined. Our results show that all of the preparations tested had potent antimicrobial activities. Effect of roasting and microwave pre-treatments of Nigella sativa L. seeds on lipase activity and the quality of the oil.
The present research studied the thermal pre-treatment of non-soaked and soaked black seed (BS) by microwave radiation (1-3.5 min) in comparison with conventional roasting (2-8 min, 180 °C). As BS was treated for a longer time, a significant increase (p < 0.05) was observed in total chlorophylls, carotenoids and phenolic contents in the extracted oils. The oils obtained from the soaked seeds (to 8%) had significantly higher oil quality properties. The optimum extraction conditions were: irradiation time of 3.5 min and BS moisture content of 8%, which resulted in an extraction yield of 35.76%, 10643.730 caffeic acid equivalents/100 g, PV of 9.63 meq O2/kg and 18.88 h of Rancimat oxidative stability. Screening of Thymoquinone Content in Commercial Nigella sativa Products to Identify a Promising and Safe Study Medication.
(1) Background: Thymoquinone (TQ) is the leading compound accounting for the pharmacological effects of Nigella sativa seed oil, also known as black seed oil. This study aimed to analyze the TQ content of commercial black seed oils and black seed oil-containing capsules to obtain information on the quality of the products and to find a promising and safe study medication for a putative clinical study. (2) Methods: Six black seed oils and five black seed oil-containing capsules were analyzed. TQ was quantified using a validated method consisting of a simple methanolic extraction and a fast HPLC-UV analysis. (3) Results: The TQ content varied from 3.08 to 809.4 mg/100 g (mean). Therapeutic effects of Nigella sativa on chronic HAART-induced hyperinsulinemia in rats.
Prolonged use of highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART) is associated with insulin resistance in HIV-1-positive patients. Small animal models that recapitulate the long-term effects of HAART may facilitate the identification of therapeutic agents to suppress these side effects. We investigated the protective effects of black seed oil (BSO) from Nigella sativa in Sprague-Dawley rats treated with a daily HAART regimen for 7 months. The antiretroviral drugs, consisting of nelfinavir (200 mg/kg), zidovudine (50 mg/kg), and efavirenz (20 mg/kg), were mixed with diet with or without BSO (400 microL/kg) supplementation. Impact of different types of olive oil on cardiovascular risk factors: A systematic review and network meta-analysis.
Background and aim: This network meta-analysis (NMA) compares the effects of different types of olive oil (OO) on cardiovascular risk factors.
Methods and results: Literature search was conducted on three electronic databases (Medline, Web of Science, and Cochrane Central).
Inclusion criteria: Randomized controlled trials (RCTs) (≥3 weeks duration of intervention) comparing at least two of the following types of OO: refined OO (ROO), mixed OO (MOO), low phenolic (extra) virgin OO (LP(E)VOO), and high phenolic (extra) virgin OO (HP(E)VOO). Random-effects NMA was performed for seven outcomes; and surface under the cumulative ranking curve (SUCRA) was estimated, using an analytical approach (P-score).
