Objectives: Honey has had a valued place in traditional medicine for centuries. Renewed interest in honey for various therapeutic purposes, including treatment of infected wounds, has led to the search for different types of honey with antibacterial activity. In this study, we have assessed the antibacterial activity of different types of honey (manuka honey from Australia, heather honey from the United Kingdom, and locally marketed Indian honey).
Methods: The agar dilution method was used to assess the antibacterial activity of honey against 152 isolates of Pseudomonas aeruginosa by determining minimum inhibitory concentrations.
Results and conclusions: The locally available (khadikraft) honey produced the best activity against Pseudomonas aeruginosa and was found to be better than all of the imported varieties of therapeutic honey.

Bactericidal activity of different honeys against pathogenic bacteria.
Background: Renewed interest in honey for various therapeutic purposes including treatment of infected wounds has led to the search for new antibacterial honeys. In this study we have assessed the antibacterial activity of three locally produced honeys and compared them to three commercial therapeutic honeys (including Medihoney and manuka honey).
Methods: An agar dilution method was used to assess the activity of honeys against 13 bacteria and one yeast. The honeys were tested at five concentrations ranging from 0.1 to 20%.
Results: Twelve of the 13 bacteria were inhibited by all honeys used in this study with only Serratia marcescens and the yeast Candida albicans not inhibited by the honeys. Thymoquinone (TQ), a compound isolated from black seed oil (Nigella sativa), has been reported to possess anti-inflammatory and anticancer activities. However, the molecular mechanisms underlying the anticancer effects of TQ remain poorly understood. In the present study, we found that TQ significantly reduced the viability of human colon cancer HCT116 cells in a concentration- and time-dependent manner. Treatment of cells with TQ induced apoptosis, which was associated with the upregulation of Bax and inhibition of Bcl-2 and Bcl-xl expression. TQ also activated caspase-9,-7, and -3, and induced the cleavage of poly-(ADP-ribose) polymerase (PARP). Thymoquinone suppresses metastasis of melanoma cells by inhibition of NLRP3 inflammasome.
The inflammasome is a multi-protein complex which when activated regulates caspase-1 activation and IL-1β and IL-18 secretion. The NLRP3 (NACHT, LRR, and pyrin domain-containing protein 3) inflammasome is constitutively assembled and activated in human melanoma cells. We have examined the inhibitory effect of thymoquinone (2-isopropyl-5-methylbenzo-1,4-quinone), a major ingredient of black seed obtained from the plant Nigella sativa on metastatic human (A375) and mouse (B16F10) melanoma cell lines. We have assessed whether thymoquinone inhibits metastasis of melanoma cells by targeting NLRP3 subunit of inflammasomes. Thymoquinone supplementation attenuates cyclophosphamide-induced cardiotoxicity in rats.
This study examined the possible protective effects of thymoquinone (TQ), the main constituent of the volatile oil of black seed (Nigella sativa), against cyclophosphamide (CP)-induced cardiotoxicity. Adult male Wistar albino rats were divided into four treatment groups. Rats in the first group were served as control. Rats in the second group received TQ (50 mg/L in drinking water) for 12 days. Animals in the third group were injected with a single dose of CP (200 mg/kg, IP) at day 5. Rats in the fourth group received TQ (50 mg/L in drinking water) for 5 days before a single dose of CP (200 mg/kg, IP) and continued thereafter throughout the experiment. Use of a Social Genomics Model to Explore Loneliness and Systemic Inflammation in an Adult Population With Chronic Lower Extremity Ulcers.
Objective: To investigate associations among demographic data, gene expression, and psychosocial variables and characterize a biomarker panel of 18 proinflammatory gene transcripts for lonely individuals with chronic lower extremity wounds.
Methods: For this observational study, data and blood samples were collected from 38 individuals at baseline and week 4 follow-up while receiving wound care. Comparisons were made between individuals who identified as higher lonely (L+) ≥40 on the UCLA Loneliness Scale or less lonely (L-) ≤39. Validated measures were used for self-reported wound pain, pain interference, sleep disturbance, physical health, depression, and wound healing, and RNA sequencing was used for whole blood samples.

Propolis antibacterial and antioxidant synergisms with gentamicin and honey.
Aims: Assess the antibacterial and antioxidant effects of ethanol extracts of Portuguese propolis samples when combined with gentamicin, a widely used aminoglycoside antibiotic, or with honey, collected from the same apiary as propolis.
Methods and results: Using the agar dilution method and DPPH free radical scavenging assay, antimicrobial and antioxidant synergistic effects between propolis and gentamicin or honey were assessed. Ethnopharmacological relevance: Very few studies examining quantitatively gender differences in the knowledge and use of medicinal plants exist for the Arab world. Differences in ethnobotanical knowledge of medicinal plants between men and women in Jeddah are explored here for the first time.
Aim of the study: Our study aims to document urban medicinal plant knowledge in Jeddah, and to answer the following questions: (1) What medicinal plants are used by Saudis in Jeddah? (2) To what extent do men and women use medicinal plants? (3) Are plants used by men significantly different to those used by women? And, (4) do men and women learn about medicinal plants in different ways? Given the gendered nature of space and relations in the Arab world, we hypothesise that men and women learn about plants in different ways and that this will contribute to explain any possible differences.

Honey has been used since ancient times for its nutritional as well as curative properties. Tualang honey is collected from wild honey bees' hives on Tualang trees found in the Malaysian rain forest. It has been used traditionally for the treatment of various diseases, where its therapeutic value has partly been related to its antioxidant properties. Use of herbal medicine and other dietary supplements in community-dwelling older people: Baseline data from the ginkgo evaluation of memory study.
Objectives: To analyze baseline data from the Ginkgo Evaluation of Memory (GEM) study, in which information was collected on the use of all dietary supplements.
Design: Cross-sectional regression analysis.
Setting: GEM study sites in California, Maryland, North Carolina, and Pennsylvania.
Participants: The GEM study enrolled 3,072 ambulatory individuals aged 75 and older between September 2000 and June 2002.

Antimicrobial Nigella sativa seed-based nanocomposite, MnO2/BC, was synthesized and utilized for the water purification through adsorption, and the photocatalytic degradation. MnO2/BC was prepared by co-precipitation method, and characterized using FT-IR, XRD, SEM, TEM, TGA, and DSC techniques. The composite was investigated for inhibition of bacterial cells growth. FT-IR spectrum indicated the presence of oxygenous groups on the surface; TGA and DSC showed thermal degradation; and XRD, SEM, and TEM investigations indicated amorphous, and porous nature of MnO2/BC having particle size of 190-220 nm. This paper reviews intriguing recent findings on the mechanisms of drug induced hearing loss caused by two major classes of therapeutic agents: the aminoglycoside antibiotics and cisplatin. Both drug categories are nephrotoxic as well as ototoxic. Aminoglycosides and cisplatin target the outer hair cells in the basal turn of the cochlea to cause high frequency sensorineural hearing loss in a substantial percentage of patients treated with these drugs. Each group of agents appears to generate reactive oxygen species within the cochlea that trigger downstream mechanisms leading to cell death. The importance of honey has been recently upgraded because of its nutrient and therapeutic effect. The adulteration of honey increased exponentially in terms of both geographic and/or botanical origin. Therefore, the need has arisen for more effective quality control methods aiming at detecting adulteration. Various novel, fast, and accurate methods like AAS, HPLC, GC-MS, ES-MS, TLC, HPAED-PAD, NMR, FT-Raman, and NIR have enriched the arsenal of analytical chemist in this direction. However, apart from these novel methods, the application of multivariate analysis and, in particular, PCA, CLA, and CA, proved to be extremely useful for grouping and detecting honey of various origins.
