Nigella sativa (NS), also known as black cumin, has long been used in traditional medicine for treating various cancer conditions. In this study, we sought to investigate the potential anti-cancer effects of NS extract using SiHa human cervical cancer cells. NS showed an 88.3% inhibition of proliferation of SiHa human cervical cancer cells at a concentration of 125 microL/mL methanolic extract at 24 h, and an IC50 value 93.2 microL/mL. NS exposure increased the expression of caspase-3, -8 and -9 several-fold. The analysis of apoptosis by Dead End terminal transferase-mediated dUTP-digoxigenin end labeling (TUNEL) assay was used to further confirm that NS induced apoptosis. Thus, NS was concluded to induce apoptosis in SiHa cell through both p53 and caspases activation. NS could potentially be an alternative source of medicine for cervical cancer therapy.

Olive oil, particularly virgin (VOO) and extra-virgin olive oil (EVOO), is a central component of the Mediterranean diet and has been associated with cardiometabolic, anti-inflammatory, and intestinal health benefits. Increasing evidence suggests that these effects may involve interactions with the gut microbiota, intestinal barrier, and host inflammatory pathways. This narrative review summarizes current evidence on the impact of olive oil, olive-derived phenolics, and olive oil-rich dietary patterns on gut microbiota modulation, barrier function, inflammatory bowel diseases, and related systemic outcomes. Impact of infrared and dry air roasting on the oxidative stability, fatty acid composition, Maillard reaction products and other chemical properties of black cumin (Nigella sativa L.) seed oil.
Black cumin seed (BCS) is a novel oil source with potential health benefits. This study investigates the influence of infrared (IR) and dry air (DA) roasting (140, 160 and 180 °C for 5 and 10 min) on BCS oil quality characteristics. Results revealed that the oxidative stability index (OSI), Maillard reaction products (MRPs), chlorophyll and carotenoid contents were increased while acid value (AV), peroxide value (PV) and color values were decreased in DA roasted (180°C for 10 min) BCS oil compared to other DA and IR treatments. DA and IR roasting slightly influenced the fatty acid composition (FAC) of BCS oils. FTIR spectra showed minor changes in peak intensities (at 2854, 2929 and 3008 cm-1) of DA and IR roasted BCS oils. DA roasting proved more effective than IR roasting. The oil from the DA roasted BCS at 180°C for 10 min had significantly higher oil quality and oxidative stability.

Postpartum sepsis following caesarean sections among women in Uganda remains a risk. However, erratic supplies of standard dressing material make the risk a reality. Alternative wound dressing materials, therefore, remain a viable option. This study examined the outcome of a honey and olive oil-based dressing material on caesarean section wound healing. Using the Uganda Industrial Research Institute (UIRI), the study team created I-Dress, a wound dressing made of honey and olive oil. A case-series study was conducted on 25 women who received I-Dress following caesarean births at three health facilities in south-west Uganda. Vital signs (temperature, blood pressure, and heart rate) were measured, along with wound induration, dehiscence, and discharge. Effect of different levels of feed added black seed (Nigella sativa L.) on the performance of broiler chicks.
The study was conducted to investigate the effect of different levels of feed added black seed (Nigella sativa L.) on the overall performance and immunity of broiler chicks at NWFP Agricultural University, Peshawar in May 2005. Four experimental rations designated as A, B, C and D having black seed at the rate of 0, 20, 30 and 40 g kg(-1) feed were fed to 160 broiler chicks, randomly distributed into 16 replicates, so as to have 4 replicates per group and 10 chicks per replicate. The experiment was lasted for 35 days. Average weight gain, feed consumption, feed efficiency, dressing percentage, weight of different body organs (breast, thigh, intestine), giblets (liver, gizzard), abdominal fat weight, antibody titer against ND, IB and IBD were used as criteria of response.
