Aim: Studies on the effect of Ramadan diurnal intermittent fasting (RDIF) on glucometabolic markers have yielded conflicting results. We conducted ameta-analysis to estimate the effect size for changes in glucometabolic markers in healthy, non-athletic Muslims during Ramadan, and to assess the effect of variable covariates using meta-regression.
Methods: CINAHL, Cochrane, EBSCOhost, EMBASE, Google Scholar, ProQuest Medical, PubMed/MEDLINE, ScienceDirect, Scopus, and Web of Science databases were searched from date of inceptionto January 2020. Fasting during Ramadan is a major tenet of the Muslim religion. All adults after the age of puberty are required to do so if health permits. However, there are exemptions to this requirement and having a chronic condition such as diabetes is one. Nevertheless, many adults and adolescents feel obliged to fast during Ramadan even though there is no absolute need to do so. This obligation must be respected. Effects of Time-Restricted Feeding and Ramadan Fasting on Body Weight, Body Composition, Glucose Responses, and Insulin Resistance: A Systematic Review of Randomized Controlled Trials.
Time-restricted feeding (TRF) and Ramadan fasting (RF) have been recently associated with several health outcomes. However, it is not yet clear if they are superior to existing treatments in terms of glucose metabolism, insulin action, and weight loss. This review aims to summarize the current data on the effects of these regimes on body weight, body composition, and glycemia. An electronic search was conducted in PUBMED and SCOPUS databases up to August 2022. Twenty-four records met the inclusion criteria and underwent a risk-of-bias assessment. The Effects of Ramadan Fasting on Body Composition, Blood Pressure, Glucose Metabolism, and Markers of Inflammation in NAFLD Patients: An Observational Trial.
Background and aim: Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is a chronic liver disease and is a serious global health problem. The past two decades have seen a rise in the number of investigations examining the health-related effects of religiously motivated fasts. Islamic Ramadan is a 28 - 30 day fast in which food and drink are prohibited during the daylight hours. The majority of health-specific findings related to Ramadan fasting are mixed. The likely causes for these heterogeneous findings are the differences between studies in the following: 1) the amount of daily fasting time; 2) the percentage of subjects who smoke, take oral medications, and/or receive intravenous fluids; and 3) the subjects' typical food choices and eating habits. The effect of Ramadan fasting on quiescent systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) patients' disease activity, health quality of life and lipid profile: a pilot study.
SLE is a common autoimmune disease with considerable morbidity. Ramadan fasting is a religious custom Muslims regularly practice. We aimed to evaluate the effect of Ramadan fasting on SLE patients' disease activity, health quality of life and lipid profile. Background: During Ramadan, observant Muslims fast from sunrise to sunset for a month. Knowing whether Ramadan fasting affects body weight has implications for health advice to the Muslim community, for understanding the effects of skipping meals on body weight, and for general weight management advice.
Methods: We compared body weight before and after the Ramadan fast and 1 month later in observant Muslims attending a Mosque in East London, UK.

Comparison of the dipeptidyl peptidase-4 inhibitor vildagliptin and the sulphonylurea gliclazide in combination with metformin, in Muslim patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus fasting during Ramadan: results of the VECTOR study.
Objective: To compare the incidence of hypoglycaemic events (HEs) in a real-world setting in Muslim patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus fasting during Ramadan.
Research design and methods: We performed a ≤16-week prospective, non-interventional, two-cohort study. Data were collected 1-6 weeks before and ≤6 weeks after fasting. Intermittent fasting in adrenal insufficiency patients: a review and guidelines for practice.
Ramadan fasting is a religious duty for adult Muslims. Even though sick people are exempted from fasting, numerous are those who insist on fasting, and seek advice from their physicians. The role of the physician is to support his patient and preserve his health. However, little is known about intermittent fasting in adrenal insufficiency. The aim of this review was to determine the risks of fasting in patients with adrenal insufficiency, the subjects at risk of complications, and the measures that can be undertaken for safe fasting. The analysis of the data of the different studies showed that there is a risk of complications during fasting in these patients. Optimal glucocorticoid replacement therapy for safe fasting has not yet been determined. Finally, a risk stratification and the modalities of the pre-Ramadan visit for adrenal insufficiency fasting patients have been suggested.

Background: Research on the health benefits of fasting is growing; this includes time-restricted feeding and Islamic fasting.
Aims: This article aims to review and highlight the similarities and differences between time-restricted feeding and Islamic fasting during Ramadan.
Methods: A scoping review was undertaken to identify relevant articles that answered the research question: what are the similarities and differences in characteristics of time-restricted feeding and Islamic fasting? MEDLINE/PubMed was searched using the terms: time-restricted feeding, and weight. Inclusion criteria were: original research and review articles; written in English; and published between the years 2000 and 2017.
