Maternal and fetal outcomes in gestational diabetes mellitus: a narrative review of dietary interventions.
Introduction: Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) is associated with a myriad of maternal and fetal complications that severely compromise the mother and child's future health. Dietary interventions are effective in reducing the risk of GDM. However, when diagnosed with GDM in 2nd and 3rd the effectiveness of these interventions on maternal and fetal health remains unexplored. Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a progressive and irreversible disease affecting many people worldwide. Recent evidence suggests that diet and lifestyle play a vital role in COPD progression. We aimed to provide a comprehensive review of the effect of healthy and unhealthy dietary patterns on preventing and treating COPD. For this reason, Scopus, EMBASE, Web of Science, and PubMed were searched. Based on our findings, it appears that adhering to a healthy dietary pattern rich in vegetables, legumes, fruit, nuts, and whole grains may have advantageous impacts on preventing and treating COPD while following an unhealthy dietary pattern rich in red and processed meat, saturated fats, sweets, and sugary drinks affect COPD negatively. The Islamic (lunar) calendar has 11 fewer days each year than the Gregorian (solar) calendar. Consequently, ambient temperatures during the month of Ramadan and the duration of the presunrise-to-sunset fast will change each year. At some point, individuals observing Ramadan will experience prolonged periods of fasting during the hot summer months. In this manuscript, findings published in the English-language medical literature that address the impact of prolonged fasting during the warmer summer months on patients with chronic kidney disease, including dialysis and transplantation patients, are reviewed. This is of particular concern given the accelerated pace of global warming. The limitations of the evidence that is currently available are also discussed, and an approach that might be used to standardize future evaluations of the impact of fasting on kidney health is suggested.

Background: As part of their religious obligation, Muslims abstain from food and drink from dawn until dusk for a 30-day period during Ramadan. Fasting may affect daily functioning, such as increased risk of collision for drivers.
