There is a knowledge gap concerning mental health changes across the Ramadan period. In a study of 284 young Israeli Muslim adults, we explored within-subject changes in global distress (GD), specific symptoms (depression, anxiety, stress), and quality of life (QoL) across five assessments spanning Ramadan fast. Using repeated-measures general linear modeling, significant effects were found for GD [F(4) = 20.890, p < 0.001], demonstrating a two-stage reduction in scores: an initial decrease during the first week of Ramadan, followed by a further decrease post-Ramadan. Females consistently reported higher GD scores [F(1) = 12.656, p < 0.001], though no significant time-point×sex interactions were found. Glycemic fluctuations, fatigue, and sleep disturbances in type 2 diabetes during ramadan fasting: A cross-sectional study.
Background: This study aimed to assess the prevalence of glycemic fluctuations, fatigue, and sleep disturbances during Ramadan, and to identify factors associated with hypoglycemia and hyperglycemia events in this period.
Methods: A cross-sectional study of 88 individuals with type 2 diabetes during Ramadan fasting from (08/03/2024) until (20/04/2024) was conducted. HbA1c levels before Ramadan were obtained from medical records. Participants monitored blood glucose twice daily (during the day and two hours after breaking fast). The need for a risk-assessment tool among patients with chronic liver diseases interested in intermittent fasting: Ramadan model.
Liver diseases, especially the chronic type, are a global concern. There is a growing interest in the intermittent fasting model due to its presumed health benefits. Ramadan fasting, although religious fasting, is one of the best examples of intermittent fasting, with some differences, and is observed by more than 1 billion Muslims around the world. This month follows the Arabic Hijri calendar, which is 12 days shorter than the Gregorian calendar; hence, this entire month of fasting may occur in any season of the year. Global Research Trends of Health-Related Publications on Ramadan Fasting from 1999 to 2021: A Bibliometric Analysis.
Ramadan fasting is one of the five pillars of Islam. The current study aims to examine, analyze, and identify trends of health-related publications on Ramadan fasting. In total, 1468 documents retrieved from Scopus were analyzed. The mean number of authors per document was 3.7, with an average of 13.3 citations per document. The UK ranked first (12.3%, n = 181) regarding the number of documents, followed by Iran (10.4%, n = 153) and then Saudi Arabia (9.8%, n = 144). The most active journal was "Diabetes Research and Clinical Practice" (4.9%, n = 72). Publications related to diabetes and fasting constituted around 29.7% (n = 436) of the literature. The research volume on Ramadan fasting has been noticeably growing. More reliable research is required to aid healthcare professionals in providing patient-specific care.

Hospitalizations in psychiatry during the month of Ramadan: A study at the Tunisian mental health hospital.
Background: Muslims fast each year during the Holy Month of Ramadan. This rite has major socio-cultural consequences. The circadian rhythms, energy expenditure, body temperature and biological clock are also influenced by Ramadan fasting. The impact of fasting on patients with mental disorders has been little studied. Changing how we risk-categorise in Ramadan: Does the IDF-DAR scoring system achieve the requirements for people with diabetes internationally?
The IDF-DAR guidance was most recently updated this year. The most notable change is the moving to a scoring system from a tabulated risk categorization to determine and classify the risk of harm from fasting derived from an online survey. This change may be appealing and is welcomed. However, such a system and the methodology underpinning it is not without limitations. This commentary highlights some of these limitations and the associated limited safe options available to individuals with diabetes desiring to fast during Ramadan. Ramadan and public health: A bibliometric analysis of top cited articles from 2004 to 2019.
Objective: The present bibliometric study aimed to identify and perform the analysis of top one hundred cited publications on Ramadan fasting and health.
Methods: The Web of Science database was searched for publication analyses of the papers published from January 2004 till June 2019. The search was performed using keywords "Ramadan" AND "Health" OR "Fast*". The descriptive analysis was performed using SPSS (version 20) software. The coauthor collaborations and keywords were analyzed using VOS viewer software (version 1.6.11).
Results: The present study found that the United Kingdom was the most productive country (n=15) followed by Turkey (n=13), Tunisia (n=12) and Saudi Arabia (n=11). Two intermittent fasting variants, intermittent energy restriction (IER) and time-restricted feeding (TRF), have received considerable interest as strategies for weight-management and/or improving metabolic health. Intermittent Fasting and Metabolic Health: From Religious Fast to Time-Restricted Feeding.
Over the past 10 to 15 years, intermittent fasting has emerged as an unconventional approach to reduce body weight and improve metabolic health beyond simple calorie restriction. In this review, we summarize findings related to Ramadan and Sunnah fasting. We then discuss the role of caloric restriction not only as an intervention for weight control, but importantly, as a strategy for healthy aging and longevity. Finally, we review the four most common intermittent fasting (IF) strategies used to date for weight management and to improve cardiometabolic health. Weight loss is common after IF but does not appear to be different than daily caloric restriction when compared directly. IF may also provide additional cardiometabolic benefit, such as insulin sensitization, that is independent from weight loss.
