Assessing the psychometric properties of the Biphasic Sleep Scale (BiSS): A novel 16-item self-report measure.
Biphasic sleep, characterized by nighttime sleep plus daytime napping, has demonstrated some cognitive, health and performance impacts when compared with consolidated monophasic sleep. This motivated the development and validation of the Biphasic Sleep Scale, reported in this paper. Scale development involved a literature review, expert input and individual interviews. The 16-item Biphasic Sleep Scale was then administered to an international online sample (n = 6965) alongside well-established validated sleep scales. Effect of homeostatic pressure and circadian rhythm on the task-switching: Evidence from drift diffusion model and ERP.
The effect of diurnal fluctuations on cognitive functions is widely studied, yet rare research has attempted to separate the role of two crucial processes underlying diurnal fluctuations: homeostatic pressure and circadian rhythm. The present study aimed to dissociate their effects by conducting a task-switching task in the morning, napping afternoon, and no-napping afternoon, respectively. Additionally, DDM and ERP were utilized to explore how these two processes differentially affect cognitive processes involved in task-switching. Associations between afternoon napping, left amygdala volume and cognitive performance in elderly with normal cognitive function.
Background: The relationship between afternoon napping and cognitive function in the elderly is very complex and the mechanism is unknown.
Methods: In the current study, 194 community elders with normal cognitive functions were included. All subjects completed baseline clinical assessment, baseline neuropsychological test as well as baseline structural MRI. Based on their napping status, these 194 participants were divided into the napping group (n = 88) and the non-napping group (n = 106). Extraction of sleep information from clinical notes of Alzheimer's disease patients using natural language processing.
Objectives: Alzheimer's disease (AD) is the most common form of dementia in the United States. Sleep is one of the lifestyle-related factors that has been shown critical for optimal cognitive function in old age. However, there is a lack of research studying the association between sleep and AD incidence. A major bottleneck for conducting such research is that the traditional way to acquire sleep information is time-consuming, inefficient, non-scalable, and limited to patients' subjective experience. We aim to automate the extraction of specific sleep-related patterns, such as snoring, napping, poor sleep quality, daytime sleepiness, night wakings, other sleep problems, and sleep duration, from clinical notes of AD patients. Causal relationship between sleep traits and cognitive impairment: A Mendelian randomization study.

Six multidimensional sleep health facets in older adults identified with factor analysis of actigraphy: Results from the Einstein Aging Study.
Objectives: The concept of multi-dimensional sleep health, originally based on self-report, was recently extended to actigraphy in older adults, yielding five components, but without a hypothesized rhythmicity factor. The current study extends prior work using a sample of older adults with a longer period of actigraphy follow-up, which may facilitate observation of the rhythmicity factor.
Methods: Wrist actigraphy measures of participants (N = 289, Mage = 77.2 years, 67% females; 47% White, 40% Black, 13% Hispanic/Others) over 2 weeks were used in exploratory factor analysis to determine factor structures, followed by confirmatory factor analysis on a different subsample. Endogenous memory reactivation during sleep in humans is clocked by slow oscillation-spindle complexes.
Sleep is thought to support memory consolidation via reactivation of prior experiences, with particular electrophysiological sleep signatures (slow oscillations (SOs) and sleep spindles) gating the information flow between relevant brain areas. However, empirical evidence for a role of endogenous memory reactivation (i.e., without experimentally delivered memory cues) for consolidation in humans is lacking. Previous research has established important developmental changes in sleep and memory during early childhood. These changes have been linked separately to brain development, yet few studies have explored their interrelations during this developmental period. In the United States, labor force market projections show significant growth in older ages. With postponed retirement and age-related health changes, attention to work times and recuperative strategies related to cognitive performance remains necessary for safe practice. The purpose of this study was to explore the relationships between long work hours, daytime naps, and cognitive performance in older adults. Cross-sectional data were obtained from 2013-2014 waves of the National Health and Aging Trends Study. A total sample of 308 workers were identified that had data on work hours, sleep-related parameters, and cognitive functioning. Sleeping like a baby: Examining relations between habitual infant sleep, recall memory, and generalization across cues at 10 months.
Previous research suggests that sleep is related to cognitive functioning in infants and adults. In the present study, we examined whether individual differences in infant sleep habits over the seven days prior to elicited imitation testing were associated with variability in (a) the encoding of 2-step event sequences and (b) memory for the presented information and generalization across cues after a 2-h delay in 10-month-olds. An ultra short episode of sleep is sufficient to promote declarative memory performance.
Various studies have demonstrated that a night of sleep has a beneficial effect on the retention of previously acquired declarative material. In two experiments, we addressed the question of whether this effect extends to daytime naps. In the first experiment we assessed free recall of a list of 30 words after a 60 min retention interval that was either filled with daytime napping or waking activity. Memory performance was significantly enhanced after napping as opposed to waking but was not correlated with time spent in slow wave sleep or total sleep time within the napping condition.
