Design: For 12 days, participants wore actigraphs and completed sleep diaries.

Participants: One hundred individuals who napped, aged 60 to 89 (including good and poor sleepers with typical age-related medical comorbidities).
Measurements: Twelve days of sleep diary and actigraphy provided subjective and objective napping and sleep data.
Results: Evening naps (within 2 hours of bedtime) were characteristic of the sample, with peak nap time occurring between 20:30 and 21:00 (average nap time occurred between 14:30 and 15:00). Ripples in the medial temporal lobe are relevant for human memory consolidation.
High-frequency oscillations (ripples) have been described in the hippocampus and rhinal cortex of both animals and human subjects and have been linked to replay and consolidation of previously acquired information. Daytime naps, motor memory consolidation and regionally specific sleep spindles.

Acoustic stimulation during sleep improves cognition and ameliorates Alzheimer's disease pathology in APP/PS1 mice.

Experimental studies have shown that sleep deprivation may lead to worse performance on cognitive tests. Cervical transcutaneous vagal nerve stimulation (ctVNS) improves human cognitive performance under sleep deprivation stress.
Fatigue is a pervasive public health and safety issue. Common fatigue countermeasures include caffeine or other chemical stimulants. Acute and chronic sleep deprivation in residents: Cognition and stress biomarkers.

The Sleepiness Curve of Young Men With and Without Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD).
Objectives: The present study aimed at comparing the sleepiness curve of young men with attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) to that of young men without ADHD before, during, and after a night of sleep deprivation. Computational Modeling of the Effects of Sleep Deprivation on the Vigilance Decrement.
Objective: We developed a computational model of the effects of sleep deprivation on the vigilance decrement by employing the methods of system dynamics modeling.
Background: Situations that require sustained attention for a prolonged duration can cause a decline in cognitive performance, the so-called vigilance decrement. One factor that should influence the vigilance decrement is fatigue in the form of sleep deprivation.
Method: We employed the methods of system dynamics modeling (numerical-integration techniques for modeling complex feedback systems) to create a computational model of the vigilance decrement. Subjective sleepiness is a sensitive indicator of insufficient sleep and impaired waking function.
The main consequence of insufficient sleep is sleepiness. While measures of sleep latency, continuous encephalographical/electro-oculographical (EEG/EOG) recording and performance tests are useful indicators of sleepiness in the laboratory and clinic, they are not easily implemented in large, real-life field studies. Subjective ratings of sleepiness, which are easily applied and unobtrusive, are an alternative, but whether they measure sleepiness sensitively, reliably and validly remains uncertain. Insomnia, excessive sleepiness, excessive fatigue, anxiety, depression and shift work disorder in nurses having less than 11 hours in-between shifts.

Predicting lapses of attention with sleep-like slow waves.
Attentional lapses occur commonly and are associated with mind wandering, where focus is turned to thoughts unrelated to ongoing tasks and environmental demands, or mind blanking, where the stream of consciousness itself comes to a halt. Comparison of 45-min nap versus no-nap during simulated night shift work on endothelial function: a randomized crossover feasibility trial.
