3451 to 3475 of 6,178The Roles of Life Satisfaction and Community Recreational Facilities in the Relationship between Loneliness and Depression in Older Adults.
Objectives: This study examined the mediating effect of life satisfaction and the moderating effect of the availability of community recreational facilities (CRF) in the association between loneliness and depression in rural older adults and urban older adults, respectively.
Methods: Quantitative data collected from 7547 Chinese older adults were analyzed using the SPSS macro PROCESS to test a moderated mediation model with life satisfaction as the mediator and CRF availability and residency type (rural vs. urban) as moderators.
Results: Loneliness negatively predicted life satisfaction, life satisfaction negatively predicted depression, and loneliness positively predicted depression. The interaction of loneliness and CRF availability had a significant effect on depression for urban older adults but not for rural older adults. The direct impact of loneliness on depression differed signif…

Applying an Antiracist Approach to Promoting Health Equity and Psychological Well-Being in Unaccompanied Immigrant Minors.
Unaccompanied immigrant minors (UIMs) are a fast-growing demographic in the United States, doubling in population since 2014.1 According to the Office of Refugee Resettlement, a UIM is someone under the age of 18 years who enters the United States without lawful status and an accompanying guardian.2 Most UIMs in the United States originate from the Central American northern triangle (ie, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras), with violence, extreme poverty, and family re-unification as the top 3 reasons for migration.1,3 Repeated exposure to stressful and/or traumatic events at home, during migration, and upon arrival increases UIMs' risk for psychological distress and mental disorders.3 UIMs' repeated encounters with race-based trauma (eg, racism, discrimination) further heightens this risk.3 The repercussions of these events are compounded by the fact that UIMs lack the adversity buffering…

Perceived Stress Mediates Associations Between Grit and Health-Related Quality of Life.
Grit, characterized by passion and perseverance in the pursuit of long-term goals, may be associated with enhanced quality of life and reduced levels of perceived chronic stress. We hypothesized that reduced levels of perceived stress may mediate the association between facets of grit (i.e., Perseverance and Consistency) and healthy functioning. We conducted two studies, one with college students and one with community adults, to test this hypothesis (cumulative N = 600). In both studies, facets of grit were assessed using the Short Grit Scale, levels of perceived chronic stress were assessed via the Perceived Stress Scale, and health-related quality of life was measured using selected questions from the Medical Outcome Study Short Form-36. Consistent with our hypothesis, perceived stress levels significantly mediated the relation between Grit-Perseverance and health-related quality of l…

When weak imagery is worse than none: Core aphantasia and hypophantasia relate differently to mental health, mediated by subjective interoception.
Aphantasia, characterized by absent or reduced visual mental imagery, has been associated with alexithymia and negative mental health outcomes. However, the underlying mechanisms remain unclear. Visual imagery has been proposed as part of an inwardly focused cognitive style that also encompasses interoceptive processing and emotion regulation, suggesting these constructs may be functionally linked. Since mental health is closely tied to interoception, we examined whether interoceptive processing mediates the relationship between imagery ability and mental health. We assessed self-reported imagery vividness (VVIQ), subjective interoceptive accuracy and attention, alexithymia, anxiety, and depression in individuals with aphantasia (n = 153, VVIQ = 16-32) and typical imagers (n = 680, VVIQ = 33-80). Within the aphantasia group, we distinguished core aphantasia (VVIQ 16-23, n = 96) from hypo…

The price of care: alcohol misuse as a moderator of financial hardship and mental health outcomes of U.S. women caregivers.
PURPOSE: Financial hardship and alcohol misuse are well-established predictors of caregiver mental health. The purpose of this study was to examine if alcohol misuse influenced the associations between financial hardship and mental health outcomes (depression diagnosis and poor mental health days). METHODS: A retrospective data analysis was conducted from 4,212 U.S. women caregivers utilizing 2023 Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System dataset. RESULTS: Alcohol misuse when measured dichotomously was not independently associated with depression diagnosis or poor mental health days. However, more frequent alcohol misuse substantially strengthened the food insecurity–psychological distress relationship among women caregivers. Financial hardship—particularly food insecurity—was strongly associated with depression and more days in the past month with worse mental health, especially among…

Advancing Pain Care for Individuals with Sickle Cell Disease: Two Innovative Psychological Approaches.
Sickle cell disease (SCD) is a hemoglobin disorder impacting red blood cell and resulting in difficult-to-control pain, which significantly impacts quality of life and psychological wellbeing. There are barriers preventing patients living with SCD from receiving psychological care, and limited work demonstrating best psychological pain care practices. We describe two innovative approaches for incorporating psychological care in two clinics (i.e., pediatric and adult) serving patients living with SCD in a Southeastern United States health system. The first is psychological screening and referral to psychotherapy program. The second is a mindfulness program offering bedside interventions, retreats, and individual sessions. These innovative treatment approaches emphasize adapting psychological care to address care barriers (e.g., access to care, cultural stigma). Adaptable, patient-centered…

Relative Leukocyte Telomere Length Is Shorter in Children and Adolescents with Type 1 Diabetes: Screening of Basic Psychosocial Aspects.
Leukocyte telomere length (LTL) is shortened in adults with type 1 diabetes (T1D), but less data is available concerning pediatric cases. Multiple factors affect LTL, namely genes, epigenetics, environmental factors, oxidation, and psychological stress. Children with T1D and their families experience chronic stress. This study aimed to investigate LTL in children with T1D (n = 35) aged 6-13 years old, in comparison to age-matched healthy counterparts (n = 35), and assess any correlation of LTL with perceived stress. Relative LTL (rLTL) was assessed through real-time qPCR. Morning serum cortisol, high-sensitivity C-Reactive Protein (hsCRP), and glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c) were measured. Children completed the validated questionnaires "Stress in Children" and "Pediatric Quality of Life". Parents answered the "Perceived Stress Scale". Children with T1D had a lower rLTL (p = 0.02) compared t…

Loneliness as a mediator between family separation and life satisfaction among Ukrainian refugee women in Germany.
The Russian invasion of Ukraine has led to one of the largest population displacements in Europe since World War II. Different from other recent refugee flows, Ukrainian refugees are predominantly women, often separated from partners who remained behind. Using data from the "IAB-BiB/FReDA-BAMF-SOEP Survey on Refugees from Ukraine in Germany," this cross-sectional study examines how separation-related loneliness and integration barriers are associated with life satisfaction among displaced women who arrived in Germany in 2022. Structural equation modeling showed that the association between forced family separation and life satisfaction operated entirely through indirect pathways involving loneliness and integration barriers. Loneliness accounted for the largest share of this indirect association and acted as a key intermediary, being linked to both lower life satisfaction and greater int…

Religiousness-happiness links in Türkiye and Jordan: the role of gratitude and envy.
Happiness is central to psychological well-being, yet less is known about the emotional processes that may help account for its association with religiousness in Muslim populations. The present study examined whether gratitude and two forms of envy (malicious and benign) were statistically associated with the relationship between religiousness and happiness among Muslim adults in Türkiye and Jordan. Participants were 812 Muslim adults who completed validated measures of religiousness, happiness, gratitude, and benign and malicious envy. Path analyses showed that religiousness was positively associated with happiness. In addition, higher religiousness was associated with greater gratitude and lower malicious envy, both of which were in turn associated with higher happiness. Benign envy was not significantly associated with either religiousness or happiness and did not show a significant i…

Awe predicts well-being via positive attention bias: Evidence from longitudinal and daily diary studies.
Awe is a mixed emotion that is considered important in the protection of well-being during crisis, such as COVID-19. However, there is limited understanding of the long-term and dynamic effects of awe on well-being and the pathways behind these effects. Drawing on the broaden-and-build theory of positive emotions and the theory of mood-congruent bias, the present study utilized longitudinal and daily diary approaches to investigate the relationship between awe and well-being, as well as the mediating role of attention bias. In longitudinal Study 1, 524 participants (Nfemale = 365, 69.7%), aged from 18 to 72, completed online surveys three times with 1-month intervals. Cross-lagged analyses demonstrated that awe exerted a significant predictive effect on individuals' well-being. Moreover, positive attention bias served as a mediator in this relationship. In diary Study 2, 183 college stud…

Are perfectionistic strivings beneficial or detrimental to well-being and achievement? Tests of procrastination and emotion regulation as moderators.
Objective: Researchers have called for an approach that examines the conditions under which perfectionistic strivings (PS) may be beneficial or detrimental to psychological functioning. We adopted a self-regulation perspective and tested whether individual differences in self-regulation (procrastination, emotion regulation) moderate PS's relationships with achievement and well-being in an academic/work-related achievement context.
Method: A sample of 183 preservice teachers participated in a study that combined "traditional" longitudinal assessment (six performance situations over a 9-month period) with repeated ambulatory assessment (measuring well-being, procrastination, and emotion regulation during a total of 910 preparation phases that preceded performance situations).
Results: Mean levels of achievement, well-being, and emotion regulation were found to be stable over time, whereas …

The association between transition into grandparenthood and Chinese older adults' subjective well-being and health: a longitudinal study.
Background: Due to low birth rates, longer life expectancy, and later childbearing, an increasing number of individuals become grandparents later in life. The transition into grandparenthood-encompassing role acquisition, duration, and role engagement-is crucial for understanding the well-being and health of older adults. However, the connection between this transition and well-being and health outcomes among older adults remains underexplored, particularly in a Chinese context that emphasizes family lineage. This study addresses this gap by analyzing longitudinal data to examine how grandparenthood transitions relate to subjective well-being and health among Chinese older adults.
Methods: Using longitudinal data from the China Longitudinal Aging Social Survey (CLASS) 2014-2020, this study investigates the associations between grandparenthood transition -specifically, grandparent role ac…
