3476 to 3500 of 6,178A Phenomenological Understanding of Aging "Well" With Multiple Sclerosis.
Background and objectives: As the life expectancy of the multiple sclerosis (MS) community increases, new innovations and understandings of what it is to age "well" are needed. Building on a line of work exploring the meaning and experiences of aging with a disabling condition, and showing how and why people aging with MS experience this phenomenon differently, this paper progresses aging and disability literature by (re)conceptualizing what "wellbeing" means to people aging with MS, and how wellbeing may be enhanced or compromised.
Research design and methods: Working with 40 persons with MS over the age of 60, we used a Heideggerian phenomenological framework to co-construct what wellbeing meant among persons aging with MS.
Results: Emphasizing the importance of the "everdayness" of wellbeing experiences, persons aging with MS discussed how wellbeing was related to "doing, being, and b…

Exploring determinants of fear of cancer recurrence in postoperative colorectal cancer patients: a random forest model approach.
Background: Colorectal cancer (CRC) is common in China, and many postoperative patients experience fear of cancer recurrence (FCR), which negatively affects mental health and quality of life. Predictors of FCR remain underexplored, and traditional regression may overlook complex interactions, whereas random forest (RF) modeling allows robust variable selection.
Purpose: To assess FCR prevalence and identify associated factors using a RF model.
Methods: Between November 2023 and May 2024, 314 postoperative colorectal cancer patients were enrolled at Fudan University Shanghai Cancer Center. Data were collected using the Brief Illness Perception Questionnaire (BIPQ), Cognitive Emotion Regulation Questionnaire (CERQ), Social Support Rating Scale (SSRS), and Social Constraints Scale-15 (SCS-15). Predictors were ranked using a random forest model and confirmed via binary logistic regression.

Well-being in middle-aged and older adults who volunteer: a qualitative network analysis.
Objective: Social participation is essential for the health of older adults. Formal volunteering can reduce loneliness and is associated with numerous positive health outcomes. Older adults have limited resources to meet their social and well-being needs. We explore factors contributing to the well-being of middle-aged and older adults who engage in formal volunteering using a qualitative social network approach.
Methods: Between 2022 and 2023, qualitative semi-structured interviews were conducted with 28 members of social clubs in Germany, aged 45-80 (mean age 62 years). Thirteen participants were retired. Eight interviewees were female and twenty were male. Participants created unstructured egocentric network maps of individuals or organisations important to their well-being. Participants reflected on their social networks using these maps, which allowed for deeper insights into changi…

Prevalence and severity of symptoms across the menopause transition: cross-sectional findings from the Australian Women's Midlife Years (AMY) Study.
Background: The premenopause-to-perimenopause transition is defined by the Stages of Reproductive Aging Workshop +10 (STRAW+10) criteria according to changed menstrual cycle frequency. However, this approach is unhelpful for women and gender-diverse people with oligomenorrhoea or amenorrhoea, and also because a range of diverse symptoms have been ascribed to menopause. We investigated the prevalence and severity of symptoms from the late reproductive stage to late postmenopause, identifying those which might best differentiate menopause onset.
Methods: The Australian Women's Midlife Years (AMY) Study was a nationally representative cross-sectional study of women aged 40-69 years who were recruited via a non-probability panel using online and offline sources between Oct 27, 2023, and March 19, 2024. To be eligible, participants needed to be able to complete a questionnaire in English. Men…

Perceived spousal similarity in outlook on life: implications for later-life well-being.
Objectives: People tend to choose marital partners who are similar to themselves, and spouses become increasingly similar in some respects due to shared life experiences. However, it is unknown whether spousal similarity contributes to the health of married people in later life. This study investigates whether and how spousal similarity in outlook on life is linked to later-life well-being.
Methods: We used data from the Wisconsin Longitudinal Study, a long-running prospective study following graduates from Wisconsin high schools in 1957 and their selected siblings. We measured perceived spousal similarity in outlook on life at both the individual (i.e., self-evaluation) and couple (i.e., concordance/discordance in evaluations between spouses) levels when participants were, 65 years old, on average. Later-life well-being was measured by self-rated general health, functional limitations, …

Using a Positive Psychology Lens to Understand How Veterinary Medicine Learning Contexts Promote Student Thriving and Inhibit Frustration.
To develop a veterinary workforce equipped for long-term professional success, educational institutions must prioritize their students' well-being. Most approaches focus on building assets within the individual, like stress management, to limit negative outcomes, like burnout. Our research proposes a positive psychology-based model of student thriving that instead emphasizes the pervasive role of the social climate within a context. Basic Psychological Needs Theory (BPNT) posits that social relationships at the institutional, faculty and staff, and peer levels will promote student thriving and limit frustration through the satisfaction or frustration of the three psychological needs of competence, autonomy, and relatedness. Veterinary medical students across the United States (N = 202) completed a survey, and we used structural equation modeling to test how their institution's social cli…

Li Y, Liu P (2025)MEDLINE-indexed journal, not yet read by usPsychology, health & medicine1 citations Upward social comparison on social networking sites (SNSs) and individual well-being: a moderated mediation model.
To explore the influence of upward social comparison on social networking sites on individual well-being, as well as the role of envy and nature connectedness, a questionnaire survey was conducted among 1078 college students. The results indicated: (1) upward social comparison on social networking sites had a significant negative effect on well-being; (2) envy played a mediating role in the relationship between upward social comparison on social networking sites and well-being; and (3) nature connectedness moderated the direct effect of upward social comparison on social networking sites on well-being and the mediating effect of envy. The present study revealed the relationship between upward social comparison on SNSs and well-being and its internal mechanism, providing concrete ways to intervene individual well-being in the Internet era.

Self-concept clarity and envy as mediators between upward social comparison on social networking sites and subjective well-being.
The popularity of social networking sites increases opportunities for upward social comparison, potentially affecting individuals' subjective well-being. However, research on how this comparison impacts well-being's sub-components (i.e., positive affect, negative affect, and life satisfaction) is scarce. This study, based on social comparison theory and the full theoretical construct of subjective well-being, explores these relationships and their mechanisms. A total of 970 Chinese youth participants (M age = 19.42 years, SD = 2.01) completed self-report measures. The results showed that the independent mediating effect of envy and the chain mediating effect of self-concept clarity and envy contributed to all three models. In addition, the independent mediating effect of self-concept clarity only contributed to the model for negative affect. This study emphasizes that the construct of en…

Kaya C (2025)MEDLINE-indexed journal, not yet read by usPsychological reports1 citations Do Virtues Influence Well-Being: The Role of Perceived Stress.
The positive results of life satisfaction among university students have been well studied in the literature. However, the forecasters of the phenomenon have not been thoroughly investigated. In the current study, multiple models were tested to investigate the mediating role of perceived stress in the relationships between virtues and life satisfaction to fill this gap. When testing the model, the effect of demographic variables was controlled. Data were collected through an online survey from a sample of 235 undergraduates. The participants responded to measures of character strengths, perceived stress, and life satisfaction. The findings reveal that perceived stress partially mediates the relationship between leadership, wisdom and life satisfaction controlling for age and gender. The leadership skills of students can be improved, and age and gender should be considered when studying l…

Context Matters: Moderating Effects in the Associations between Pornography Use, Perceived Addiction, and Relationship Well-being.
While perceived addiction and religiosity have been key contextual factors in understanding the link between pornography use and personal distress, these contextual factors have been explored less in the relational literature. Using a large nonprobability convenience sample from the United States, a moderated mediation model of the association between pornography use alone and two key indicators of relationship quality (relationship satisfaction and relationship stability) was explored. Results suggested that both general and aggressive pornography use alone were associated with less relationship satisfaction and relationship stability even when accounting for a range of potentially confounding variables. Perceived addiction partially mediated these associations, while both religiosity and gender moderated them. Generally, higher religiosity and being male were linked to compounding nega…

A feasibility study on a novel well-being intervention for university students.
Objectives: Challenging transitions, increased stress and mental ill health can affect students' academic performance and their capacity to remain in higher education. Prevention and early treatment of mental health problems in college students is therefore a key public health priority, nationally and internationally. Developing a range of evidence-based interventions targeting the mental health of students is critical. We examined the feasibility and acceptability of a new universal time use and well-being intervention, the 'Everyday Matters: Healthy Habits for University Life' digital badge (EMDB), a co-curricular micro-credential for first-year college students.
Methods: This study used a single-arm, pre-post design for first-year undergraduate students. The EMDB comprised eight 1-hour lunchtime sessions on brain development and time-use habits across the 24 hours of the day including…

Evaluation of the Scales for Social Comparison of Appearance and Social Comparison of Well-Being.
People constantly compare their appearance and well-being to that of other individuals. However, a measure of social comparison of well-being is lacking and existing appearance-related social comparison assessment is limited to comparison tendency using predefined social situations. This limits our understanding of the role of social comparison in appearance and well-being. Therefore, we developed the Scale for Social Comparison of Appearance (SSC-A) and the Scale for Social Comparison of Well-Being (SSC-W) to assess upward and downward social comparisons with regard to (a) frequency, (b) perceived discrepancy to the standard, and (c) engendered affective impact during the last 3 weeks. In one longitudinal and three cross-sectional studies (Ns = 500-1,121), we administered the SSC-A or SSC-W alongside measures of appearance social comparison, body satisfaction, self-concept, social rank,…

Meaning in life following service among post-9/11 military veterans: A latent growth mixture model analysis.
Meaning in life refers to the "sense made of, and significance felt regarding, the nature of one's being and existence." Meaningful living promotes well-being, resilience, and personal growth. Yet, much remains unknown about how meaning changes over time and determinants of meaning, particularly during major life transitions. We identified distinct trajectories of meaning using latent growth mixture models and examined prospective predictors of class membership in a military veteran cohort assessed at multiple time points throughout the first 3 years after leaving service. Three trajectories were identified: consistently high meaning (89.5%; n = 7025), diminishing meaning (6.1%; n = 479), and strengthening meaning (4.4%; n = 348). Veterans with greater posttraumatic stress symptoms, depression symptoms, and moral injury experienced increased odds of a less adaptive trajectory (i.e. dimin…

'Thank you for loving me': A qualitative study on perceptions of gratitude and their effects in palliative care patients and relatives.
Background: Empirical studies suggest that gratitude positively influence the quality of life of palliative patients and relatives. However, the literature is marked by a lack of conceptual clarity about what gratitude is and whether it can bring about individual and social benefits.
Aim: This paper explores how palliative care patients and relatives understand gratitude, how discursive representations of gratitude may affect their positions, perceptions and relations, and how to conceptualise gratitude in the palliative context.
Design: We examine 33 gratitude letters written by patients and relatives and 25 semi-structured interviews conducted as part of a pilot gratitude intervention study. We use a qualitative approach, thematic analysis, within a conceptual framework of discourse analysis.
Settings/participants: Data were collected from 23 patients and 13 relatives recruited through…

What Families of Children With Medical Complexity Say They Need: Humanism in Care Delivery Change.
There is growing consensus that centering lived experience is needed to meaningfully transform the burdensome systems of care for children with medical complexity (CMC) and their families. The Collaborative Improvement and Innovation Network to Advance Care for Children with Medical Complexity quality improvement initiative, co-led with family colleagues, illuminates a critical real-world view of systems change to address unintended bias and demystify the medical model of care. We share candid themes in which families describe the need for systems to counteract widespread misconceptions and bias to achieve meaningful system change. We held family-designed, family-led focus groups (N = 127 across 27 groups) within 10 diverse state teams. Families were asked about CMC quality of life and family wellbeing. We transcribed and coded the responses to uncover salient themes. We uncovered 2 majo…
