4301 to 4325 of 6,178How family structure shapes adolescent mental health under financial hardship?
Background: Financial hardship and family structure are each known to influence adolescent mental health, but their interactive effects remain underexplored. This study examined whether specific family structures buffer or amplify the impact of household financial hardship on adolescent mental health during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Methods: We analyzed data from the 2021-2022 Korea Youth Risk Behavior Survey, a nationally representative sample of 101,402 adolescents aged 12-18 years. Mental health outcomes included sleep problems, loneliness, perceived stress, anxiety, depression, and suicidal ideation. Financial hardship was assessed by self-reported household-level economic difficulty due to the pandemic. Family structure was categorized as two-parent, single-mother, single-father, step-family, and grandparent family. We conducted complex-sample logistic regression and calculated both ad…

Meaning in life as a mediator between death anxiety and life satisfaction.
Research based on Terror Management Theory suggests that death anxiety is a fundamental existential concern that threatens individuals' life satisfaction and that, in the process of coping with this anxiety, individuals tend to seek meaning in life. However, studies directly examining the impact of death anxiety on life satisfaction and the mediating role of meaning are lacking. This study aims to investigate the relationship between death anxiety and life satisfaction among adults and to test the mediating role of meaning in life in this relationship. 396 participants completed online scales measuring death anxiety, life satisfaction, and meaning in life. The findings revealed that death anxiety significantly predicted life satisfaction and that meaning in life partially mediated this relationship. The results suggest that meaning in life may play a buffering role in the association bet…

Background: Social media is a central part of the lives of adolescents in 2025. The recent rise of short-form content and gamification features has coincided with an increasing prevalence of mental health problems among this age group. Many policy makers are considering restrictions to the amount of time under-16s spend on social media. Despite this, there is limited contemporary evidence about the extent of their social media use, nor meaningful estimates of the effect a reduction may have on their mental health. Here, we estimate daily social media usage for adolescents in the culturally and ethnically diverse city of Bradford, England, plus its association with their mental health.
Method: We did a cross-sectional analysis of data from Born in Bradford: Age of Wonder 2023-24, a school-based survey of students aged 12-15 (n = 8,466). We weighted the sample to be representative of the c…

US State Policies Regarding Social Media: Do Policies Match the Evidence?
Policy Points State policymakers have moved rapidly to regulate adolescent social media use, frequently stating concerns about mental health, harmful content exposure, and developmental impacts. The degree to which policymakers' arguments in favor of state social media regulations correspond to the state of the current scientific evidence remains questionable. The evidence to substantiate policymakers' assertions has substantial limitations in the ability to answer causal questions, but some promising directions are emerging around targeted protections for highly susceptible youth.
Context: The potential adverse effects of social media use for adolescents have received substantial attention. In response, a growing number of state-level social media regulations are emerging in the United States. These policy interventions are being implemented in the context of mixed scientific evidence, …

An Investigation of Adolescent Mental Health In a New York City Cohort Before and During the COVID-19 Pandemic in the Primary Care Setting.
Objectives: To investigate differences in the prevalence of positive depression screens before and during the COVID-19 pandemic within primary care and assess patient characteristics based on depression screen results in both time periods.
Methods: This was a retrospective cohort study of patients ages 12-21 years-old from two urban primary care clinics seen for well-child visits and who had completed depression screens before and during the pandemic. Additional variables evaluated included demographics, substance use, and mental health (MH) conditions such as anxiety, depression, and suicidal ideation (SI). Paired analyses using McNemar's Chi-squared test and paired t-test evaluated differences in variables between time periods. Patients were also categorized into four groups determined by their depression screen result in each period and characteristics between the four groups were com…

Association between communication patterns, benefit finding, and relationship satisfaction in stroke couples: an actor-partner interdependence mediation model.
Aims: To explore the mediating role of relationship satisfaction between communication patterns and benefit findings in stroke couples using the actor-partner interdependence mediation model.
Methods and results: A cross-sectional study was conducted from October 2022 to April 2023 in China. Based on the actor-partner interdependence mediation model, we used structural equation modelling to explore the mediating role of relationship satisfaction of stroke patients and their spouses in communication patterns and benefit findings. A total of 381 stroke couples (patients, 61.4% male, mean age 54.06; caregivers, mean age 53.58) were included in the data analysis. Actor effects showed that stroke couples' relationship satisfaction mediated each of their own three communication patterns (constructive communication, demand/withdraw communication, and mutual avoidance) and benefit findings. In a…

Teachers' experiences of supporting the mental health needs of refugee students in resource-poor settings: a qualitative study in Iran.
Background: Exposure to traumatic events is common amongst children from refugee backgrounds. Given the restricted access of refugee children to formal specialist resources and disrupted parental support mechanisms in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), teachers are increasingly expected to be the primary responders to the complex psychosocial needs of trauma-exposed refugee children. However, despite LMICs hosting over two-thirds of the world's refugee children, our current knowledge of how teachers respond to these needs is predominantly drawn from studies conducted in well-resourced, high-income countries, which fails to capture the unique experiences of teachers in inadequately resourced schools in LMICs.Objective: We aimed to explore qualitatively the experiences of school teachers in responding to the mental health and psychosocial needs of trauma-exposed refugee students in …

Peer Relationships Are a Direct Cause of the Adolescent Mental Health Crisis: Interpretable Machine Learning Analysis of 2 Large Cohort Studies.
Background: Converging evidence indicates an adolescent mental health crisis in Western societies that has developed and exacerbated over the past decade. The proposed driving factors of this trend include more screen time, physical inactivity, and social isolation, but their causal influence on mental health is insufficiently understood.
Objective: The objective of this study is to test whether and based on which predictor variables the development of mental health in adolescents in the last decade can be predicted and to better understand the causal chain of factors at work.
Methods: We implemented an interpretable machine learning pipeline based on gradient boosting regression with repeated cross-validation to assess the development of mental health throughout adolescence in members of 2 longitudinal cohort studies, the British Millenium cohort (MC; n=8599) and the German Health Inter…

A Multidimensional Exploration of the Link Between Religiosity and Mental Wellbeing for 2SLGBTQI+ Canadians.
2SLGBTQI+ Canadians occupy various prejudicial cis/heteronormative systems, as illustrated by rapidly increasing homo/bi/transphobia and gender- and sexuality-based violence targeting this population. As a result, their mental wellbeing is progressively deteriorating; the identification of risk and protective factors for this population's mental wellbeing is vital. Religiosity, although protective for other populations, may be such a risk factor for the mental wellbeing of some 2SLGBTQI+ people. This study investigated and compared how five independent dimensions of religiosity-private practice, ideology, intellect, public practice, and experience-are linked to mental wellbeing for 2SLGBTQI+ Canadians who report a religious belief. Through its cross-sectional design, this study was conducted among self-identified 2SLGBTQI+ people in Canada (N = 903) by means of an online survey from Nove…

The role of bodily experiences during pregnancy on mother and infant outcomes.
Pregnancy is a transformative time for women and their bodies, and therefore thoughts and feelings and about one's own body and internal bodily sensations may understandably change during this period. Body satisfaction and interoception have been found to influence factors such as antenatal attachment (AA) and maternal mental health. However, mixed results in the literature suggest complex relationships between the bodily experience during pregnancy and outcomes, necessitating a broader investigative approach. We aim to examine the relationship between the pregnancy bodily experience and multiple mother-infant outcomes. It is hypothesised that poor bodily experiences during pregnancy will have negative impacts on these outcomes. Cross-sectional online survey data was collected from individuals at various gestations throughout pregnancy as part of a larger longitudinal study (N = 253, mea…

Understanding the Effect of Financial Behaviour on Mental Health: Evidence From Australia.
This paper uses the Household, Income and Labour Dynamics in Australia (HILDA) data from 2001 to 2022 to examine the relationship between individual financial behaviours and mental health. Two distinct types of financial behaviours (savings and debt) and their relationship with mental health (as measured by Mental Health Inventory-5) are considered over several annual waves. We examine causality between the two variables utilising an instrumental variable approach and find that stable financial behaviour significantly improves the mental health of individuals. Specifically, maintaining regular savings habits and making timely payments on credit card bills have a positive impact on the mental health of individuals. Furthermore, the impact of savings behaviour on mental health is stronger for men than women. Our results are robust to alternative measures of subjective wellbeing and estimat…

Parental Mental Health, Gender, and Lifestyle Effects on Post-Pandemic Child and Adolescent Psychosocial Problems: A Cross-Sectional Survey in Northern Italy.
Background: The exacerbation of psychosocial problems among children and adolescents during the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic necessitates an assessment of the long-term mental health impact of pandemic interventions. Focusing on both pandemic-related factors and demographic variables, such as gender and daily habits, an analysis was conducted to understand how these elements continue to affect young populations in the post-pandemic era.
Methods: In April 2023, a comprehensive online survey was administered to families in South Tyrol, Italy, with children aged 7-19 years, to ensure age and gender representation. The survey included parent ratings and adolescent (11-19 years) self-reports using standardized instruments to measure the symptoms of mental health problems (Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire, SDQ), anxiety (Screen for Child Anxiety Related Emotional Disord…

We provide fresh estimates of a change in the nationwide prevalence of mental health symptoms among US children during the COVID-19 pandemic using National Health Interview Survey data (2019-22) on children aged 2-17 years (n = 27,378; age subgroups 2-5, 6-11, and 12-17) to assess overall mental distress and 19 specific outcomes related to developmental, communicative, cognitive, affective, and behavioral domains. Raw and adjusted (for socio-demographics) linear regressions estimated the change in prevalence for each outcome between 2019 (baseline year) and three succeeding years (2020-2022). Summary scores for mental distress rose between 2019 and 2020 (1.01 to 1.18 points, range of 0-15), declined slightly in 2021 (1.09), and climbed sharply again in 2022 (1.25). The declines primarily affected adolescents (1.11 at baseline, 1.24 in 2020, 1.30 in 2021, and 1.49 in 2022). Specific outco…

Does Grit Compensate for Family Background Disadvantage in Predicting Mental Health Difficulties? A Longitudinal Study of Chinese Migrant and Urban Children.
The significant population of Chinese rural-to-urban migrant children has sparked considerable domestic and international concern regarding their disadvantaged family circumstances and their escalating prevalence of internalizing and externalizing problems. Derived from the resource substitution hypothesis, non-cognitive factors such as personality traits may act as "substitution" resources for educational outcomes of children from less privileged families. Yet, the compensatory role of personality traits as substitution resources in children's mental health has received limited attention, including that of migrant children. This study examined the interplay of trait-like grit and family SES on emotional and conduct problems among Chinese migrant and urban children. The current sample consisted of 770 migrant children (Mage = 10.45 and SDage = 0.68 years; 38.4% girls) and their 222 urban…

Psychological capital variables as protective factors in indigenous youth experiencing homelessness.
Indigenous youth in the United States are at high-risk for experiencing homelessness related to adverse childhood experiences such as parental substance use and low educational attainment. Such experiences may lead to adverse physical and mental health issues; these youth also have positive attributes of psychological capita (hope, self-efficacy, resilience, optimism) that are related to health outcomes. The purpose of this secondary analysis was to describe demographic attributes and psychological capital in Indigenous youth experiencing homelessness (IYEH) who participated in a longitudinal intervention study related to safe sex behaviors and life satisfaction. From a total of 602, Indigenous participants (n = 111; mean age 21.25 ± 1.82 years) were recruited from drop-in centers in Austin, Texas and Columbus, Ohio. Data were collected immediately after the intervention and at 3- and 6-…
