A minuteAfter a rowCoreYour marriage

Before you walk away, say when you are coming back.

Before you walk away from an argument today, name a time. "I need twenty minutes. I'll come find you at eight." Then go, and be back at eight. The pause is not the point. The returning is.

Qur’an and Sunnah

The Prophet ﷺ taught that strength is not overpowering others but holding yourself when anger rises. Stepping back is that strength. Coming back when you said you would is what makes it mercy rather than punishment.

Another of His signs is that He created spouses from among yourselves for you to live with in tranquillity: He ordained love and kindness between you. There truly are signs in this for those who reflect

What the research says

You are not avoiding the conversation. You are making sure you are able to have it.

Interaction patterns and physiological arousal predicting dissolution.

Strength of evidence: one line of research. A single study, or a theoretical account.

Why it works

Physiological flooding degrades access to empathy, humour and complex reasoning exactly when they are needed. A break restores capacity. But an unannounced exit reads to the attachment system as inaccessibility, which escalates rather than calms.

The longer version

Stepping away from a conflict when you are flooded is sound. What turns it from a pause into an abandonment is leaving without saying when you will return. Your spouse's nervous system cannot tell the difference between someone calming down and someone gone. Naming the time removes the ambiguity, and coming back on time is what makes the promise mean anything the next time you need it. If you are not ready at eight, come back anyway and say so. Even that is a return.

When not to

If your spouse is frightened of your anger, or you are frightened of theirs, this is not a technique problem. Please speak to someone who can help you assess it safely.
