If you are standing and angry, sit down.

A physical change of position interrupts an escalating state more reliably than deciding to calm down. If you are standing when the argument sharpens, sit. If you are already sitting, put something down.

Qur’an and Sunnah

The Prophet ﷺ said that when one of you becomes angry while standing, he should sit down; and if the anger does not leave him, he should lie down. The instruction is physical, not philosophical.

What the research says

This sounds too simple to matter. It works precisely because it does not require you to be reasonable first.

Gottman, J.; Levenson, R. (1992). Marital processes predictive of later dissolution: Behavior, physiology, and health.. Journal of Personality and Social Psychology doi

Interaction patterns and physiological arousal predicting dissolution.

Strength of evidence: one line of research. A single study, or a theoretical account.

Why it works

Postural change alters arousal and breaks the behavioural momentum of escalation. It is easier to interrupt a state through the body than to reason your way out of it while flooded.
