Take the full twenty minutes. Five is not enough.
Physiological recovery from flooding takes longer than it feels like it should. If you come back after five minutes you are still carrying it. Take twenty, and spend them on something genuinely absorbing.
Qur’an and Sunnah

What the research says
Rehearsing your argument during the break is not a break. It is a rehearsal.
Gottman, J.; Levenson, R. (1992). Marital processes predictive of later dissolution: Behavior, physiology, and health.. Journal of Personality and Social Psychology doi
Interaction patterns and physiological arousal predicting dissolution.
Strength of evidence: one line of research. A single study, or a theoretical account.
Why it works
Diffuse physiological arousal subsides on its own timescale, not on the timescale of feeling ready. Returning too early re-enters the conversation with the same impairment that caused the break.
Where this sits: Gottman method, Manage Conflict.
