Apologise for what landed, not for what you meant.
If you owe an apology today, leave out the word "if" and leave out your intentions. Name what you actually did and what it cost them. "I dismissed you in front of your sister, and it made you feel small." Then stop talking.
Qur’an and Sunnah
The Quran instructs that reconciliation is better, and describes repelling what is bad with what is better, so that the one between whom and you was enmity becomes as a close friend. An apology that names the harm plainly is that better response. Explaining yourself first repels nothing.
If a wife fears high-handedness or alienation from her husband, neither of them will be blamed if they come to a peaceful settlement, for peace is best. Although human souls are prone to selfishness, if you do good and are mindful of God, He is well aware of all that you do
Qur’an 4:128read it in the library
Good and evil cannot be equal. [Prophet], repel evil with what is better and your enemy will become as close as an old and valued friend

What the research says
Your intention was real. It is just not the thing they need addressed first.

Why it works
Repair attempts distinguish stable couples from unstable ones far more than the absence of conflict does, and it is the reception of repair, not its production, that carries the weight. An apology that defends intent is reliably not received.
The longer version
Almost every failed apology fails in the same place: it defends the intention. "I didn't mean it like that" is true, and it is not an apology. It asks your spouse to relocate the problem into their own misperception. An apology that works names the act and names the impact, and does not append a defence. The hardest part is stopping. The silence after feels unbearable and is where the repair actually happens. Explaining what you meant is a separate conversation; it can happen later, once they believe you understood.
When not to
Apology closes a wound that has stopped being made. If it is still being made, what is needed first is change, not a pardon.
Where this sits: Gottman method, Manage Conflict; repair.
