ADHD now sits with the neurodevelopmental conditions in the diagnostic manual rather than under disorders that begin in childhood. That move carries a claim worth hearing: this is about how a brain is built, and it does not stop at eighteen.
The older category quietly implied something you would grow out of, and plenty of adults were told exactly that. Shifting it means the evidence for a heritable, developmental basis was judged strong enough to stand on its own. If you are an adult wondering whether it is too late for any of this to apply to you, the manual has already answered that.
Qur’an and Sunnah
We create man in the finest state (Quran 95:4). The way you are made is spoken of there as good work, not as a fault to be grown out of.

What the research says
The updated European consensus statement on the diagnosis and treatment of adult ADHD reports that it remains underdiagnosed and undertreated across many European countries, with consequences for how chronic and impairing it becomes. A consensus statement is expert agreement rather than a trial, so it describes the state of practice rather than proving what would change it. It does say plainly that adults are being missed.

Strength of evidence: one line of research. A single study, or a theoretical account.
Why it works
A condition understood as developmental stays legitimate in adulthood, so the help attached to it does too.
This one is still a draft. It is waiting on a scholar and a clinician to read it before it is published.
Near this one
Sensing that you got something wrong socially, without knowing what, tends to turn into watching yourself constantly. That watching is usually what makes the next conversation go badly, not the original mistake.
A blank face is not usually an angry one. If you tend to read disappointment into people who are only tired or thinking, that reading is a habit, and habits can be checked.
Manuals rename things. Paediatric bipolar became disruptive mood dysregulation disorder, whole categories were reshuffled to line up with the international classification, and none of it changed who anybody was.
