Making a child repeat a year rarely fixes what went wrong. The same lessons without different support tend to produce the same result, plus the sting of being the oldest in the room.

If a year has gone badly, the useful questions are what support was missing and whether something else, such as an unrecognised learning difficulty, is in play. Ask for an assessment and for specific adjustments in writing before you agree to a repeat. Sometimes repeating is still the right call, but it should arrive with something else changed alongside it.

Qur’an and Sunnah

We have assigned a law and a path to each of you (Quran 5:48). Different paths towards the same good is the idea, and a changed plan for a struggling year is a small version of it.

We sent to you [Muhammad] the Scripture with the truth, confirming the Scriptures that came before it, and with final authority over them: so judge between them according to what God has sent down. Do not follow their whims, which deviate from the truth that has come to you. We have assigned a law and a path to each of you. If God had so willed, He would have made you one community, but He wanted to test you through that which He has given you, so race to do good: you will all return to God and He will make clear to you the matters you differed about

What the research says

A literature review of mind wandering in ADHD links unintended drifting of attention to ADHD symptoms and names internal distraction alongside the external kind. If attention keeps sliding off the lesson, a second run at the same lesson does not address that. The review is about attention rather than about school retention policy, so the application is mine and not the authors'.

Strength of evidence: one line of research. A single study, or a theoretical account.

Why it works

More of the same teaching does not help when the difficulty is holding attention on it rather than hearing it once.

This one is still a draft. It is waiting on a scholar and a clinician to read it before it is published.
