AreasFocus, starting, and ADHDWhat ADHD actually is

A minuteAny ordinary dayADHD skillsFocus, starting, and ADHD

There is a real difference between a person who will not start and a person who cannot get started, and with ADHD it is nearly always the second.

This matters most in how you speak to yourself, and in how the people near you speak to you. Refusal invites pressure and punishment, which reliably make starting harder. Trouble getting going invites something else: a smaller first step, someone working alongside you, the task cut into pieces whose end you can actually see.

Qur’an and Sunnah

He raises some of you above others in rank, to test you through what He gives you (Quran 6:165). What you were given, including a mind that starts slowly, is the material of your own test rather than a verdict on your character.

It is He who made you successors on the earth and raises some of you above others in rank, to test you through what He gives you. [Prophet], your Lord is swift in punishment, yet He is most forgiving and merciful

What the research says

A meta-analysis of choice impulsivity in young people with ADHD found a stronger pull towards an immediate reward over a larger delayed one, and treats that as a form of impulsivity distinct from simply acting too fast. It gives a measurable shape to what looks from outside like refusal. The findings are group averages in children and adolescents, so they explain a tendency rather than any one person's morning.

Strength of evidence: one line of research. A single study, or a theoretical account.

Why it works

Effort has to be mobilised before it can be applied, and it is the mobilising that is unreliable here, not the willingness.

This one is still a draft. It is waiting on a scholar and a clinician to read it before it is published.
