Areas › Focus, starting, and ADHD › What ADHD actually is
If thoughts of ending your life turn up, tell someone that day. Do not wait to see whether they pass, and do not wait until you can explain them properly.
Feelings can arrive at full volume with ADHD, and the gap between a thought and acting on it can be short, which is why waiting it out alone is the wrong plan here. Decide now, while you are steady, who you would tell and what number you would use, because the version of you who needs it will not want to go looking. One person is enough to start with: a partner, a friend, your doctor, a crisis line.
Qur’an and Sunnah
We know what his soul whispers to him: We are closer to him than his jugular vein (Quran 50:16). What you cannot put into words is already fully known, and you are not alone with it even when it feels that way.
We created man––We know what his soul whispers to him: We are closer to him than his jugular vein––

What the research says
A meta-analysis found that difficulty regulating emotion is a substantial part of ADHD related impairment, sitting alongside the executive difficulties cognitive theories emphasise. A separate meta-analysis found a stronger pull towards immediate over delayed reward in young people with ADHD. Neither study measured suicide, so take them as reasons that feeling can come fast and hard, not as evidence about anyone's risk.

Strength of evidence: one line of research. A single study, or a theoretical account.
Why it works
Saying it out loud puts another person and some time between the feeling and any action.
When not to
If you are in danger now, contact your local emergency number or a crisis line rather than working through this on your own.
This one is still a draft. It is waiting on a scholar and a clinician to read it before it is published.
Near this one
ADHD reaches into a marriage in ways couples rarely say out loud: attention drifting during a conversation that mattered, or a partner who has started to feel like an unpaid manager. It is a fair thing to talk about and to get help with.
If a young person says they do not feel ready to drive, take that as information rather than something to talk them out of. Plenty of them know their own attention better than the adults around them do.
Use the established rating scales and a proper developmental history rather than working from the impression someone makes in a first meeting. What you see in a room is a small and unrepresentative sample.
