Areas › Focus, starting, and ADHD › What ADHD actually is
ADHD reaches into a marriage in ways couples rarely say out loud: attention drifting during a conversation that mattered, or a partner who has started to feel like an unpaid manager. It is a fair thing to talk about and to get help with.
The hurt usually comes from what each of you concludes rather than from the behaviour itself. One reads distraction as not being loved, the other reads every reminder as being told off. Saying the mechanism out loud, that attention wanders regardless of how much someone cares, takes a surprising amount of heat out of it. Books and counselling written specifically for couples where ADHD is in the picture exist, and they are more use than general marriage advice.
Qur’an and Sunnah
If your Lord had pleased, He would have made all people a single community, but they continue to have their differences (Quran 11:118). Difference between two people is the standing state of things, so it is the handling of it that is the work.
وَلَوۡ شَآءَ رَبُّكَ لَجَعَلَ ٱلنَّاسَ أُمَّةࣰ وَٰحِدَةࣰۖ وَلَا يَزَالُونَ مُخۡتَلِفِينَ

What the research says
A meta-analysis found that difficulty regulating emotion is a substantial part of ADHD related impairment, alongside the executive difficulties cognitive theories emphasise. Big reactions in either direction are part of the picture and not a sign that a marriage is failing. The studies pooled were in children, so this is background rather than research about couples.

Strength of evidence: one line of research. A single study, or a theoretical account.
Why it works
Most of the damage comes from what a distracted moment gets taken to mean, not from the moment itself.
This one is still a draft. It is waiting on a scholar and a clinician to read it before it is published.
Near this one
If things fell apart when your routine did, that is information rather than a character flaw. A great deal of what was holding you together was built into the day around you.
You will see wildly different figures for how many children still have ADHD as adults. The range mostly reflects what is being counted: symptoms on a childhood list, or whether life is actually being made harder.
Plenty of adults with ADHD keep tripping over rules nobody ever stated: how long a turn in a conversation lasts, when a story has gone on too long, when a joke reads differently than you meant it.
