In any quiet practice, dhikr, prayer, sitting still, your mind will go. The practice is not staying put. It is noticing you have gone and coming back, however many times that turns out to be.
Set the bar at a length you can actually manage, two or three minutes to begin with, rather than the twenty minutes somebody recommended. Counting on your fingers or on beads gives attention something physical to hold. Coming back thirty times in five minutes is thirty repetitions of the thing you are training, not thirty failures, and versions of mindfulness adapted for ADHD are built around exactly that.
Qur’an and Sunnah
Not so those who pray (Quran 70:22). Restlessness is named plainly in that passage, and what is set against it is a practice returned to again and again.

What the research says
A literature review of mind wandering in ADHD gathers evidence linking unintended drifting of attention to ADHD symptoms, naming internal distraction as well as external. That is a good description of what happens when you sit still and try to hold one thing. It reviews the drifting itself rather than testing any practice for it.

Strength of evidence: one line of research. A single study, or a theoretical account.
Why it works
The return is the repetition that builds the skill, so a wandering mind gives you more practice rather than less.
This one is still a draft. It is waiting on a scholar and a clinician to read it before it is published.
Near this one
ADHD does not look the same in two people. If someone tells you that you cannot have it because you are calm, or organised at work, or did well at school, they are describing one version of it.
There is no age at which finding out stops being worth it. People have been diagnosed in their eighties and described it as the first explanation that ever fitted.
Some families make it a house rule that driving happens only on a day the medication has been taken. It works because it ties a privilege to safety rather than to obedience.
