Some long acting tablets are small machines. The coating gives you the first part within about half an hour, then fluid seeps in through a laser drilled hole and pushes the rest out steadily across eight to ten hours.
Knowing this turns a vague pill into something a hesitant person can picture, which is often what they needed. It also explains why the empty shell can appear later intact, and why the tablet must never be crushed or chewed, since crushing wrecks the delivery arrangement and releases everything at once. If swallowing it whole is the problem, ask about other formulations rather than breaking this one.

What the research says
A randomised crossover trial found once daily long acting methylphenidate matched three times daily dosing in both laboratory and natural settings, which is the practical case for these formulations: the same benefit without a dose in the middle of the school day. It is an older trial using the outcomes of its time. What it settles is that equivalence, not which formulation will suit a given person.

Most long acting stimulant capsules hold two sorts of beads, one that dissolves straight away and one coated to dissolve later. That is the whole reason a single morning capsule can do what used to need a lunchtime dose as well.
