Areas › Focus, starting, and ADHD › Medication and how it works
Being in recovery is not a reason to leave an attention difficulty untreated. The restlessness that made a substance useful is still there once the substance goes.
Clinicians often hold back here, uneasy about a stimulant for someone with a history, and that caution is understandable. The other choice carries a cost too: an unquiet mind with nothing offered for it, at exactly the moment someone is trying to stay away from what used to quieten it. The workable version is a plan made jointly with the addiction team, longer acting formulations, closer review, and honesty on all sides about what is being taken.
This explains how treatments work. Never start, stop or change a medication because of something you read here.
Qur’an and Sunnah
Job cried to his Lord, 'Suffering has truly afflicted me, but you are the Most Merciful of the merciful' (Quran 21:83). He named the affliction plainly instead of managing it alone, which is what asking for both problems to be treated looks like.
Remember Job, when he cried to his Lord, ‘Suffering has truly afflicted me, but you are the Most Merciful of the merciful.’

What the research says
A randomised trial in adults who had both ADHD and cocaine use disorder gave either extended-release mixed amphetamine salts or placebo, and found both ADHD symptoms and cocaine abstinence improved on medication. A separate placebo-controlled trial of long-acting methylphenidate in adult male prisoners, a group where ADHD is common and treatment rarely studied, also found symptoms fell. Both are single trials in particular populations, so they answer the specific fear rather than settling the wider question.

Strength of evidence: one line of research. A single study, or a theoretical account.
Why it works
Removing a substance does not remove the thing it was doing a job for.
When not to
This is a decision for a prescriber who knows the full substance history, never something to arrange informally.
This one is still a draft. It is waiting on a scholar and a clinician to read it before it is published.

Waking your child at six to give the tablet so it has taken hold by breakfast, then letting them fall back to sleep, is not a strange thing you invented because you are failing. It is a reasonable answer to a real gap in how the medicine works.
Stand up slowly. Getting off the floor after an hour of gaming, or out of bed in the morning, is where the dizziness tends to catch people.
Debt, impulsive spending, an account that never quite recovers: this belongs in the conversation about attention rather than in a separate drawer marked shame.
