When a dose wears off, things can feel worse than they ever did untreated. A good deal of that is contrast rather than the medicine leaving a debt behind.
You have spent the day at one level and then meet your own baseline without warning, late in the afternoon, usually with something still to do. Reading it as withdrawal pushes towards a bigger morning dose. Reading it as coverage running out points at timing instead: where the hard hours actually fall, and what is supposed to be happening in them.

What the research says
A meta-analysis of imaging studies found stimulants normalise activity in frontal and striatal regions during tasks that need attention and holding a response back. That support is present while the medicine is active and gone when it is not, which fits the experience of a sudden drop rather than a slow fade. The imaging does not settle the rebound question, and it does make the contrast account plausible.

The drop feels sharp because you are comparing yourself with your afternoon rather than with a normal day.
When not to
Persistent agitation or real distress as a dose wears off is worth reporting, since that is not the ordinary picture.

A single nerve cell can be in contact with hundreds of others. That fanning out is the plainest reason side effects exist at all.
Some medicines arrive inactive and only become active once the body has broken them apart. Because that conversion happens at a fixed rate, the peak is blunted, the effect stretches out, and getting the drug in faster does not make it work faster.
The message is not made fresh each time it is needed. It sits ready in small sacs at the end of the cell, waiting to be tipped out into the gap.
