Areas › Your body › Moving your body
When you reach a goal, stop and let yourself register it before moving on to the next one. Otherwise you collect achievements and never feel any of them.
The pause can be tiny. Say out loud what you did, tell someone, sit with it for a minute, thank God for it. Racing straight on to the next target means the effort never gets credited to you, and after enough of that you can have done a great deal and still feel you have managed nothing.
Qur’an and Sunnah
He watered their flocks for them, withdrew into the shade, and prayed (Quran 28:24). The work is followed by stopping, and then by turning to God with whatever comes next.
He watered their flocks for them, withdrew into the shade, and prayed, ‘My Lord, I am in dire need of whatever good thing You may send me,’

What the research says
In a study of university students, exercise was linked with wellbeing partly through body image and self esteem rather than through fitness alone. How you come to see yourself is part of the route, and noticing what you have done is how that view gets built. The study was cross sectional, so it describes the pattern rather than proving the sequence.

Strength of evidence: one line of research. A single study, or a theoretical account.
Why it works
A reward that never gets registered cannot strengthen the behaviour that earned it.
This one is still a draft. It is waiting on a scholar and a clinician to read it before it is published.
Near this one
When you need to correct one person, say it to the room. Everyone gets the instruction and nobody gets the sting.
Almost nobody needs convincing that exercise helps. The gap is between knowing it and doing it, so spend your effort there.
Whatever gets you outside and quiet for a stretch of time counts. Fishing, sitting in a hide, weeding, waiting in the car park with the window down.
