Long goals need markers you can reach this month. Belts work because you get a visible, earned step every so often instead of one distant summit.
Build the same thing into anything you are trying to keep up: a distance, a number of sessions, a move you could not do in January. Make it something other people can see, and let them see it. A goal three years out has almost no pull on a Tuesday evening, while a marker six weeks out does.
Qur’an and Sunnah
That his labour will be seen (Quran 53:40). Effort is promised a witness, and a visible step along the way is a small human version of that.

What the research says
A Cochrane review of 39 trials found exercise moderately better than no treatment for depression, with only a small and non-significant difference against therapy or medication in the strongest trials. Moderate is a real effect and a gradual one. Change on that scale is easy to miss while it is happening, which is a good argument for marking the stages.

Strength of evidence: one line of research. A single study, or a theoretical account.
Why it works
A reward that arrives soon can hold a behaviour in place, and a distant one cannot.
This one is still a draft. It is waiting on a scholar and a clinician to read it before it is published.
Near this one
With a small child who is struggling with both movement and speech, start with the body. Balance and steadiness come before a child can take in much language or learning.
Unstructured play in a big open space settles a child. A structured class teaches them how to be with other children. You want some of each, for different reasons.
A promising study can be very small. Thirteen teenagers, teachers doing the rating, and a fortnight of follow up is a good start and not a settled answer.
