Classes and clubs work mostly because somebody notices when you are not there. It is the being expected, more than the workout, that gets you out of the door.

A running club, a swimming group, a friend at the gate at seven. On the evening when you feel like nothing, an arrangement with another person survives where a private intention does not. Pick the format where your absence would be noticed. If you are the sort who hates groups, one person waiting is enough.

Qur’an and Sunnah

A strong, trustworthy man is the best to hire (Quran 28:26). Being someone others can count on, and having someone you can count on, is treated as a plain good.

One of the women said, ‘Father, hire him: a strong, trustworthy man is the best to hire.’

What the research says

A multicentre randomised trial found a structured bouldering psychotherapy programme reduced depression more than exercise on its own, which puts the human setting of movement inside the effect rather than beside it. That programme was therapist led, so it is not the same as a running club. It does support the general point that who you are with changes what movement does for you.

Strength of evidence: one line of research. A single study, or a theoretical account.

Why it works

An arrangement with somebody else holds when your own intention has quietly collapsed.

This one is still a draft. It is waiting on a scholar and a clinician to read it before it is published.
