A workable rule for anything new: do not be the first to use it, and do not be the last either. Both ends carry a cost.
Being first means carrying the risks nobody has found yet. Being last means somebody waits years for help that was already sitting there. Most careful practice lives in between, which in practice means letting a treatment be used widely for a while and then looking again. If you are being offered something very new, it is reasonable to ask what has been published since it was licensed.

What the research says
Bupropion for adults with ADHD shows what that middle looks like. A Cochrane review found a modest reduction in symptoms but rated the evidence low certainty and based on a few small trials. That is not a reason to rule it out, and it is a reason not to treat it as settled. More trials could move the number in either direction.

If you carry a firm dislike of medication from childhood, it is worth asking what you actually remember. Often what is remembered is a row between two adults rather than anything the medicine did.
Smoking runs high in ADHD, and nicotine genuinely does something for attention. It helps to treat that as self-medication rather than as one more impulsive habit.
When a dose wears off, things can feel worse than they ever did untreated. A good deal of that is contrast rather than the medicine leaving a debt behind.
