A nerve cell spends its life adding up. Signals arrive along its branches, the body of the cell totals them, and at one particular point it either fires or it does not.
That threshold is where the pushing and the holding back meet, and it is roughly the level at which these medicines work. None of them decides anything on your behalf. They shift how easily the sum reaches the line, which is a small change made in a great many places at once.

What the research says
The same machinery does not behave identically at every age. A randomised clinical trial comparing young and adult patients found methylphenidate's effects on the dopaminergic system differed between children and adults, raising questions about age dependent and possibly lasting effects. That is one trial looking at one drug. It is enough to show that identical anatomy does not mean an identical response.

Saying that medication helps is not the same as saying everyone should be on it. If you have walked in braced for a push, it is fine to say so at the start.
