Areas › Focus, starting, and ADHD › Medication and how it works
There are really only two directions in the nervous system, go and stop. Almost everything a medicine does comes down to shifting the balance between them somewhere.
It is a crude picture and a useful one. Drugs pushing the stopping side tend to slow and settle you, drugs pushing the going side tend to lift and sharpen, and most complaints about a medicine can be put in those terms. Saying I feel slowed right down, or I feel wound up, gives a prescriber far more to work with than saying it does not suit me.
This explains how treatments work. Never start, stop or change a medication because of something you read here.
Qur’an and Sunnah
'truly it is in the remembrance of God that hearts find peace' (Quran 13:28). There is a settling that comes from somewhere else entirely, and a medicine adjusting go and stop does not stand in for it.

What the research says
One change can settle two problems that look unrelated. In children who had both ADHD and an anxiety disorder, a randomised double blind trial found atomoxetine improved both sets of symptoms against placebo. That is a single trial in one particular group. It does show that a drug is not obliged to trade one problem for another.

Strength of evidence: one line of research. A single study, or a theoretical account.
Why it works
Nearly every effect comes out as more go or more stop somewhere in the system.
This one is still a draft. It is waiting on a scholar and a clinician to read it before it is published.
Near this one
That locked design turned out to carry an unplanned kindness: a somewhat longer day, and for many teenagers and adults a softer start and a softer finish, with less jaw clenching and less of the ragged hour when it wears off.
When a prescription cannot be filled, you can report it to the medicines regulator's shortage inbox, naming the medication and the pharmacy. Nobody writes back, and people often find their prescription turns up soon afterwards.
If you open atomoxetine capsules to mix the contents into food, keep it away from your eyes and wash your hands afterwards. The powder stings badly.
