After a message has been delivered, the cell hoovers up what is left over and packs it away to use again. A reuptake inhibitor simply slows that hoovering down.
Once you have the image, the name explains itself, and so does the fact that nothing is being added to you. The message you made stays around longer and gets heard for longer. It also shows why these drugs need your own system to be producing something in the first place, and why the effect is a nudge rather than a switch.

What the research says
Drugs acting on these transporters do reduce symptoms, and the long view is thinner. A Cochrane review of amphetamines for adults with ADHD found symptom reduction alongside short trial durations and high dropout, leaving longer term safety uncertain. Short trials and dropout are the honest limits of that evidence. It is a clean example of a clear short term answer sitting beside an open long term one.

You may hear that being treated as a child leaves an advantage that lasts even after you stop. It is a comforting claim and the strongest evidence does not quite bear it out.
Stimulant medication does not install an ability you did not have. It raises how much signal is available at the junctions between nerve cells, so the circuits you already own can hold that signal long enough to use it.
An immediate release dose gives you the whole thing at once: quick to start, strong at the top, gone within a few hours. If that is what you take, put the demanding things inside the hours it actually covers.
