Choosing the dull useful thing over the bright easy one starts with a pause, not with willpower. If the pause never happens, nothing downstream of it gets a chance to happen either.
The chain runs roughly like this: something stops you for a second, you notice what you are doing, the later consequence comes into view, and only then can you choose differently. Most attempts at this push on the last link and tell you to just do the boring thing. It is more useful to put something in the way of the first link: the phone in another room, the app shut down, a note on the laptop that makes you stop for a beat.
Qur’an and Sunnah
Do not rush to recite before the revelation is fully complete (Quran 20:114). Letting the whole thing arrive before acting is treated there as the better instinct.
exalted be God, the one who is truly in control. [Prophet], do not rush to recite before the revelation is fully complete but say, ‘Lord, increase me in knowledge!’

What the research says
A longitudinal study of children found that the early capacity to wait and to hold back a response predicted ADHD symptoms years later, by third grade. That is prediction over time in a general sample, not proof that training a pause fixes anything. It does place inhibition early in the sequence rather than at the end of it.

Strength of evidence: one line of research. A single study, or a theoretical account.
Why it works
You cannot weigh up what you have not paused long enough to see.
This one is still a draft. It is waiting on a scholar and a clinician to read it before it is published.
Near this one
Some people do not really perceive time passing. It is more like weather, something you are inside of, and then it is suddenly six o'clock.
When someone has missed the deadline again, the talk about how they always do this changes nothing except how they feel. If you want a different Friday, the conversation belongs on Monday, and it is about the plan rather than the person.
Keep one short question and use it everywhere: is this what I should be doing right now. Nothing clever, just the same words often enough that they turn up on their own.
