Before you decide, stop and picture Thursday twice: once having done a bit of this today, once not. Let both of them land properly.
The comparison is what does the work. A single imagined outcome is easy to shrug off, but holding the two side by side makes the cost of waiting visible while you still have a choice about it. Give each a few seconds with some detail in it: where you will be, what will be sitting in your inbox, how your chest will feel.
Qur’an and Sunnah
So race for your Lord's forgiveness and a Garden as wide as the heavens and earth (Quran 57:21). The distant thing is described in detail precisely so that it can move you now.
So race for your Lord’s forgiveness and a Garden as wide as the heavens and earth, prepared for those who believe in God and His messengers: that is God’s bounty, which He bestows on whoever He pleases. God’s bounty is infinite

What the research says
A meta-analysis of brain imaging studies found that holding the future in mind and valuing delayed rewards draw on overlapping systems, which suggests working towards something distant is a cognitive capacity rather than a virtue. That makes it something you can practise. Overlap in imaging is indirect evidence, though, and it does not test this particular exercise.

Strength of evidence: one line of research. A single study, or a theoretical account.
Why it works
A future you can actually picture pulls on you more than one you merely know about.
This one is still a draft. It is waiting on a scholar and a clinician to read it before it is published.
Near this one
When you are torn about something, get both sides out of your head and onto paper. Two columns, everything you can think of, no tidying as you go.
The hardest kind of delaying to catch is the useful kind. You clear the inbox, sort the cupboard, answer three messages, and all of it is real work, and none of it is the thing.
Pick a system that is good enough, spend one evening on it at most, and then use it for a month without changing anything.
