When you are the one helping, let the tone stay warm and a little funny. A person can hear a hard truth about their own week if it does not arrive solemnly.
Solemn advice gets defended against and then forgotten, and the moment it is needed is later, alone, with nobody there to repeat it. Something said lightly, even a bit over the top, is more likely to come back at the right minute. The content can stay serious underneath: they are the one who will carry the cost, and the cost has a date on it.
Qur’an and Sunnah
By an act of mercy from God, you were gentle in your dealings with them (Quran 3:159). The gentleness came first, and the honest advice was heard because of it.
By an act of mercy from God, you [Prophet] were gentle in your dealings with them- had you been harsh, or hard-hearted, they would have dispersed and left you- so pardon them and ask forgiveness for them. Consult with them about matters, then, when you have decided on a course of action, put your trust in God: God loves those who put their trust in Him

What the research says
A Cochrane review describes motivational interviewing as a directive but person-centred style whose aim is helping someone work through their own mixed feelings rather than pushing them. That backs the stance rather than the humour specifically, and reviews of this approach report modest effects overall.

Strength of evidence: one line of research. A single study, or a theoretical account.
Why it works
Gentleness keeps someone listening, and what was said with a smile comes back more easily.
This one is still a draft. It is waiting on a scholar and a clinician to read it before it is published.

Take half a minute and see Thursday night in detail, both versions: the one where you did some of this today, and the one where you did not.
When you are torn about something, get both sides out of your head and onto paper. Two columns, everything you can think of, no tidying as you go.
At some point is not a deadline, and your brain treats it accordingly. If you want to move on something, give it a day, an hour, and a specific thing that happens if it slips.
