The bag that has to travel with you tomorrow goes on top of your shoes, not neatly beside the desk. Let the object stand in the way of a route you walk without thinking.
The phrase worth keeping is point of performance: the reminder has to sit where the action happens, at the time it has to happen. A note on the kitchen table does nothing for a thing that only ever happens at the front door. Pick the spot where your body will physically meet the object, and keep the number of these objects small, because a hallway full of reminders turns into scenery within a week.
Qur’an and Sunnah
When the call to prayer is made on the day of congregation, hurry towards the reminder of God and leave off your trading (Quran 62:9). The cue arrives from outside and interrupts whatever you were doing, which is the same work an object in your path is doing for you.
Believers! When the call to prayer is made on the day of congregation, hurry towards the reminder of God and leave off your trading––that is better for you, if only you knew––

What the research says
A conceptual review of cognitive offloading, meaning handing mental work to something outside your head, argues that it can lower the load or add to it depending on how the arrangement is set up. It is a review of ideas rather than a trial, so it does not tell you that a bag by the door works. What it does support is the care you take over placement: an offload that is badly arranged can cost more than it saves.

Strength of evidence: one line of research. A single study, or a theoretical account.
Why it works
You do not have to remember something you are made to trip over at the exact moment it matters.
This one is still a draft. It is waiting on a scholar and a clinician to read it before it is published.
Near this one
Start the email and then stop: address it, write the subject line, leave it unsent. The half finished thing sits in your drafts looking wrong until you deal with it.
Most of what we call memory looks backwards. The kind that actually runs your week is the other sort: a plan that has to show up in your head at the one moment you could still act on it.
Anything that comes round every month should be leaving your account without you. Direct debits and standing orders take the remembering out of the job altogether, which beats any reminder you could set.
